  1. Ayuh - it's all about customer service on So You Want To Be A Consultant · · Score: 0

For eighteen months I tried the consulting gig. It wasn't bad. But the executive summary is right on. Did some work for a small attorneys office and from there it blosomed. What I found out was that attorney are the least technically adept of any professionals.

"Our attack on the DST cipher by no means implies wholesale dismantling of the security of the SpeedPass network, nor easy theft of automobiles." But for $3,500 a thief could effectively use this device and a dent puller to steal a car. Nice - all this does is give us a more technically adept thief.

30 bits? That's all they rely on to secure a vehicle? I don't have to go into it for the geeks here but that's a woefully small number of combinations. When even 128 bit encryption used with WEP can be broken what the hell was TI thinking?

I'm sorry but the Bell Co's and Cell carriers have been overcharging us for years while provided progressively worse service over time. I made the jump to VoIP three months ago and don't regret it at all. I had been paying Verizon $88 a month for their unlimite local/ld package. Now I pay a bit over $24.99 a month. Big difference there. I'm all for sticking it to the big carriers. They need to learn not to try to rake customers over the coals. For example, there's no reason why there shouldn't be a sub $50 unlimited cell plan. But they get away with charging what they do for a reason.

Heh - I just had to poke tthe original poster for using the wrong units. But global warming is a phenomenon that has been studied and confirmed for many years now. The problem is that it is essentially too late to stop it. The political sphere has long been co-opted by big business and their only concern is those little green pieces of paper with pictures of dead presidents on them. There are several promising technologies though, like thermal depolymerization, spray on solar that's 30% efficient because it utilizes infrared spectrum, etc. I don't see hydrogen as being the answer. Right now there are but two forms of terrestrial hydrogen. The first is locked up in water molecules and could be extracted via electrolysis but would be woefully inefficient. The second is that the hyrdrocarbon cracking process produces copious amounts of hydrogen and for years the oil refineries have been venting it out and burning it on the top of the stack. I would be loathe to let the current infrastructure have control of the available hydrogen. That said, there is also an enormous amount of natural gas under the ocean floor but we just haven't figured out how to extract it yet. And on the far fringe, Titan has more than enough methane to keep us going for quite some time.

  7. Hate to say it on What Do You Do When Outsourcing Goes Bad? · · Score: 0

You can pretty much kiss the money goodbye. Let this serve as a lesson that payment should NEVER be made until product received and tested per prior contractual agreement.

If this in fact was outsourced to a firm in another country it will be damnably difficult to get your funds.

Never be afraid to beat up a vendor contract. I found this out a few years back. You'll be surprised how much more flexible a contract comes the higher the total cost of the contract.

First, if the U.S. had bothered to parity tie the dollar to the Euro we wouldn't be in Iraq. That said, I find it ridiculous that companies charge higher or lower prices bases on region. So long as there are different currencies this will continue to happen. Whatever happened to the days when the power supplies on a computer had a 120/220 50/60Hz switch on the back? Now you have to be cognizant of what you've got and buy the appropriate converters. I also find it hard to believe that some computer gear and supplies are cheaper in the United States. Maybe it is just because I haven't experience it from the other side of the world. But print cartridges? Come on, people are just going to defeat the regionalization and go on doing what they've been doing for eons. The fact that the DMCA doesn't exist in Fiji only makes it more likely to happen.

Indeed - with streaming media becoming more and more mature people could, uh, torrent tv shows, movies etc. And for every tracked site the MPAA shuts down, another three pop up. It is a losing proposition and the studios that back the MPAA aren't losing money. But if they continue this bullshit instead of adpating their market to the net economy they are doomed.
