I just heard some sad news on CNN. Author/activist Susan Sontag was found dead in her New York home this morning. There weren't anymore details. Even if you didn't enjoy her work, there's no denying her contributions to popular culture. Truly an American icon.
If I'm unsure, I've found the best thing to do is to read user comments about the software if possible. Google on the software name and see what people are saying about it. When some piece of free software contains hidden spyware, people are usually pissed off enough to post about it.
This is a legitimate point that might cross some potential advertiser's minds. Would they want to post a job ad on a site that advertises goat porn? Sure most slashdotters are open minded enough to know that a site like that has content from many different people and it does not represent the viewpoints of the site owners, bla bla bla. But think of how that would be perceived by some older hiring manager.
