I live in Belgium and I have my personal id ever since I was twelve. I remember I was proud going to city hall to get my first ID card. Although we are obliged to carry our id-card all the time, I have never felt oppressed or restricted by having it and I have also never experienced any problem at all with my id card.
In 2003 our government introduced electronic ID-cards and decided to replace all id-cards with those new e-id's. I have mine since last year and am very pleased with it. The best thing about these cards is that I can attach a card-reader to my pc and fill in all kinds of forms online and sign them electronically.
