I think because of the ever increasing lines of codes in the Linux kernel we will be subject to humiliating vulnerabilities in the future. Even open source user-space apps will suffer a similar consequence as did IE and MS Office. Right-wing developers like GRsecurity, RSBAC and OPENBSD will always be important to hit the brakes on development, for the sake of the reliability of software.
On the other hand, someone has to be there to steer new development and bring ideas into reality.
