I think the fragmentation is mostly on the Web application side. Prior to C# and.NET if you wanted to develop a web app with Microsoft technologies you were probably using the pre-.Net version of ASP, which has various drawbacks.
Microsoft smartly realized that they needed a framework for Web applications that included object oriented programming. They also realized that Java was very successful with its use in J2EE Web Development (Servlets, JSP, EJB).
So for their push into the Web world, they "copied" Java to some extent, thereby luring some Java programmers into their world, and also providing argument that.Net was as good as J2EE.
I'm running FF 2.0.0.16.
Help->Check for Updates...
"There are no new updates available. Firefox may check periodically for new updates"
So ah like what are they waiting for? Where is my "A new version of Firefox is available" message????
They shouldn't put a nag screen up if their own update tool won't actually update anything.
Bottom line-> don't spend billions on oil exploration and refineries etc. Just put massive solar cells in space or on moon and get cheap energy forever more.

Thats a ridiculous argument. We would never put something a mere 10 meters squared into orbit for this purpose. Read this for some real options: http://www.spacefuture.com/archive/a_fresh_look_at_space_solar_power_new_architectures_concepts_and_technologies.shtml. Also, we are constantly sending the shuttle and other stuff into space anyway, so if its not a solar panel being launched it will be something else using your 100kg of fuel.

Hmm... How about http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.superpages .com . Lets see, there's an entry for Dec 26th, 1996. Follow that and you get to http://web.archive.org/web/19961230224759/yp.gte.n et/ which shows that superpages.com had a way to search by zip code way back in 1996, before the filing date of the patent. Weird its almost as if someone saw that functionality online and then tried to patent it after the fact.
