In Singapore, you don't see gum because it is illegal. It is illegal because they actually have high-traffic outdoor escalators in the city, and they were spending way too much money cleaning the gum off of them. So to save money, they just made gum illegal. Graffiti is a cultural artifact. I don't think gum falling out of people's mouths is.
Which 4 are good? The point was, Republicans have traditionally stood for fiscal responsibility, free trade, personal responsibility, and government non-intrusion into personal lives. The Bush Jr. administration oversaw unprecedented deficit spending and intrusions into personal liberties, admittedly as a a knee-jerk reaction to horrendous act. But "Conservatism" means maintaining the status quo, not going into fits of over-reaction. It was that "tax and spend liberal" Bill Clinton that balanced the budget, got half the welfare recipients off the welfare roles, and greatly advanced free trade, making him a much better "Republican" than Bush! The only useful purpose the Republicans currently serve (other than to serve as a bad example) is to remind us that deficit spending cannot continue unabated indefinitely. Although I believe deficit spending to build infrastructure is appropriate in times of recession, we do need to carefully consider each no expenditure. The flip side is that during economic boom times the government should not attempt to compete with the private sector in attracting workers and instead should put money into a rainy day fund to be used to pay for the pump priming during the next recession.
The Segway would have been a good idea at 1/10 the cost. And it would have been a lot cheaper if Kamen hadn't insisted on 2 wheels instead of 3. Personally, I think he really wanted to build a 2 wheeled electric wheel chair, and conned the investors into paying the development costs of a personal transportation device with the same technology.
In Nordic countries they can only use bicycles half the year. I hear they do a lot of skiing and skating too. I was most impressed with Amsterdam, where you can actually get anywhere you want to go by bicycle.
It would be a lot cheaper to make people walk than to pay the lawsuits from people that fall getting on to or off of a 30 mph walkway! That and outdoor environments and mechanical equipment do not play well together. Just ask your local mall what they spend every year just cleaning gum off of the escalator.
PITA = Pain In The Ass (or a type of flat bread)
PETA = People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (or
People Eating Tasty Animals)
Yes, some people consider PETA to be a PITA.
What's interesting is that the Republicans that want to argue that the National Health Care plan is unconstitutional will also implicitly be arguing that Gonzalez v. Raich was incorrect -- despite the fact that it was strongly argued for by the last Republican administration. (In my opinion, based on results, G. W. was NOT a good Republican!)
Get displays up in the 300-400PPI region and none of this is a problem anymore. It is a question of angle of view, not absolute pixel spacing. Specifying the pixels per inch is useless without also specifying the distance between the display and the eye. That being said, a 4000x4000 pixel display it about the point at which the human can no longer perceive individual pixels while simultaneously viewing the entire display. Higher resolutions are required if you want to be able to focus in on a small area of the display without making out individual pixels.
But this inventor isn't really talking about displays, he is talking about how images are stored in a file. And what he is doing looks more like a cheap way of doing a fractal image. Real fractals would be better, but brute forcing the encoding is currently extremely compute intensive.
Or fractal images could be used to produce even better pictures that would scale well. Sounds like he is trying to invent a half-assed fractal (which admittedly would take less processing to produce).
The current problem is that on an LCD display, the Red, Green, and Blue pixels are adjacent to each other, not co-located. Coming up with a scheme to make all 3 colors appear to emanate from the exact same point would be a useful development.
DVRs already have two "tuners" so you can watch one channel while recording another, or record two channels at the same time. I just wasn't aware they built the boxes with two separate outputs.
You think that will make a difference to a Supreme Court that has already decided that the Commerce Clause allows the Feds to regulate what plants you grow in your own home for your own use, on the premise that you just might sell them to somebody in another state? (Gonzales v. Raich)State's Rights have already been completely nullified by the current court.
Are you aware of the fact that the Shift and Caps Lock keys on your keyboard are broken? Yes, I believe representative democracy is better than direct democracy for a lot of things. However, I do think we should be allowed to decide what purposes at least a percentage of our tax remittances are used for when we file our taxes. That would make it easy to determine which programs are unpopular with the taxpaying public.
One set top box can output two separate channels? Yes, that sounds like a great way to do it for a large number of receivers... I wonder how the cable company feels about it.
Nice for Comcast, sucks for the common people trying not to waste their hard-earned money. Unless you're really rural, "the common people" can get off-air digital TV for free. Cable TV is a luxury, not a necessity. (And don't tell me it is good for emergency broadcasts; that purpose is much better served by radio.)
Have you considered that they are not "scrambling" the digital signal, but rather compressing it to save bandwidth, and that the TV's QAM receiver is incapable of uncompressing it?
P.S. Have you tried reading a book instead? Supernatural and CSI are not necessities of life.
If you don't mind them all being tuned to the same channel, you only need 1 converter box per building. Might also need an RF amplifier to help with distribution since by definition splitting the signal attenuates it.
They've actually made "looking like a douche" illegal! Now, before you argue that you have a constitutional right to look like a douche, let me remind you that your right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins, and if people scream "My God, My eyes!" when they see you, chances are you are infringing on THEIR right to not see mullets while walking down the street!

Which helps to explain another phenomenon about the Netherlands and the Nordic countries -- the only obese people you see are tourists.
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. In Seattle, used gum has become a tourist attraction.

In most airports, since most people choose to stand on the moving sidewalks, I can get to the gate faster by avoiding the moving sidewalks.
Nobody goes on Twitter anymore -- it's too crowded! (With apologies to Yogi Berra.)

I'm still confused about what they used for tiny little ring girls...

I'm sure he would do that... Well, in that case, perhaps black leather chaps would be more appropriate...

Democracy is 2 wolves and a sheep deciding on what to have for dinner...
In a word? Anti-aliasing.

Just exactly what the fuck is wrong with square pixels? They are the easiest to manipulate algorithmically.
If you don't mind them all being tuned to the same channel, you only need 1 converter box per building. Might also need an RF amplifier to help with distribution since by definition splitting the signal attenuates it.
