When I use my laptop at any WIFI connection, I use OpenVPN to create a secure connection.When I have to use a public computer, I use ssh and a hardware token which generates a one-time password.Of course, you will have to have your own 'server' connected to the Internet, however this could also be a DSL box at home.(and it requires some work to install this, but that's part of the fun obviously)
