Pprogramming PCs can be done quite quickly and easily with drag and drop Visual programming, which makes Assembly Programming a bit too slow for most people... but what about programming robots or large mainframes instead of PCs ???
As a programmer with a Ph.D. in math, I like Assembly Programming, but seldom actually get the chance to use it (other than one or two drops to it within Visual C for some special subroutine). The last time was for a medium sized company here in Montreal, when they bought a robotic spindler from China. I was supposed to take a spool of wire and wrap it to make any one of a large choice of electomagnets or electric motors... it would not interface... since Chinese Mandarin is my 5th of 6 languages, they hired me to rewrite the controlling software... and they actually wanted it done in Assenbler!... but yeah, MS Visual Studio gets called for with almost all my other programming...
although there are many fancy new high tech stuff, lets start with simple chemistry... green glowing light sticks and dry-ice to make spooky fog... an almost MUST have... the techie pumps, fans, and flow control devices to make it a good show or better show will depend on your budget... you could go all the way and spend a small fortune on a so called smart house... with computer controls for everything... lights, fans, sound system, heating/cooling, auto-open/close doors, special glass windows on inner walls/doors with LCD between two panes (program to alternate between transparent and some sort of spooky image)... the list goes on...
