  1. Re:If it did happen, it wouldn't be an x86 "Wintel on Dvorak Thinks Apple Will Switch to Intel · · Score: 2, Interesting

Dvorak didn't say Apple would switch to Pentium.

First Dvorak says Apple wouldn't have to rationalize lower closkspeed (MHz myth) anymore if it switched to Intel. Then he suggests Apple will choose Itanium? Last time I checked Itanium 2 was no faster than a G4 in clock speed. Dvorak should inform himself about Intel's products if he wants to be credible.

  2. Browser bug is fixed on Apple Updates to Java 1.4.1 · · Score: 4, Informative

Just installed it and now I can finally scroll a web page with an embedded Java applet without leaving behind artifacts in the broswer window from the applet. The difference is obvious in a page like news.bbc.co.uk were the news ticker no longer corrupts the whole page view when scrolling.

  3. Re:You never know... on Andreessen on the Browser Wars · · Score: 1

Perhaps noreigiantroll hasn't actually used any of these browsers on MacOSX. If he had he would know why Apple uses IE. On my G4 cube, the launch time for IE 5.1 is >2 seconds til I can type in a url and go. The launch time for Mozilla 1.1a is about 12-13 seconds, and 1.1a has the fastest launch time I have seen yet with Mozilla. Open the Mozilla 1.1a preferences dialog on the Mac with the Classic theme applied to the interface. You will see that the window is not even sized properly and some text and buttons are cut off at the right side of the dialog box. This is most pronounced in the Advanced->Cache view. To Mozilla's credit, I don't get the spinning beach ball when rendering very large pages, while IE appears to be locked up when it is actually just rendering very slowly (it happens most often with Slashdot discussions with many posts). Sure IE's not perfect, but it just looks better and launches quickly. As for Chimera, it renders pages very quickly, but it is no where near being feature complete and suffers from a very slow launch. I think Chimera has a bright future, but I wouldn't expect to see it bundled with OSX for at least another year.

  4. Linux boxes in retail on AOL in Negotiations to Buy Red Hat? · · Score: 1

No linux distro has the clout in the consumer market to get a name brand pc on a shelf at the local Best Buy pre-loaded with Linux and not windows. AOL however does. I predict AOL would partner with a hardware company such as Sony, HP, or Compaq to put Linux pc's on the shelf at the local Best Buy/Comp USA. They would run promotions that would give large rebates to anyone who purchases an AOL Linux pc and signs a multi-year service agreement. The AOL distro of Linux will be crippled so that the user cannot easily reconfigure the networking, and AOL will provide only one desktop environment to keep things simple for the masses and easy for AOL's support people. Crippling the distro would also enable AOL to lock the average user into AOL service, since the average user can't/is afraid to do things like install their own OS or perform some simple hacks to regain control of their computer. A simpler set top box would also be likely.

All together I think it would be a very good thing for Linux. Competition heats up in the consumer desktop market. Hardware vendors probably step up their Linux efforts. Everyone wins.

  5. You're a babbling idiot. on The Music Industry and the MP3 · · Score: 1
A very small number of musicians are paid well. But most have second jobs.

"open source music. music should be free. f- the bands" --did C. Taco write a little script to automatically post tripe like this about every subject posted on slashdot? I mean, if the story was frog-leg sandwiches in Marseilles, would two or three posts an hour automatically appear saying:

"Open source frog-legs. Frog-legs chould be free. f-ck the French chefs and waiters and those friggin' 'suits' who own the restaurants!"

    Think for yourself Anonymous Waldo.
