The data is probably meaningless since the only markets in computing not penetrated by MS are either niche and hardware.
This article compares niche software and mass produced software, and comes to the suprising conclusion that the sale price of a mass produced product is lower. Even more astounding when you consider that software has as near to zero marginal cost as can be imagined.
A better comparison might be MS vs. the hardware market. In this context MS is massively over charging. While hardware has dropped to a small fraction of previous cost, MS has stayed relatively static.
