Longhorn isn't going to 'break' compatibility with current software. Your old programs are still going to work on it...
Microsoft *have* to be interested in interoperability especially between Windows revisions. If they broke compatibility with Longhorn, *no-one* would upgrade because they'd be effectively throwing away all the money they spent on their old software. I can see the tag-line now... "Windows Secure 2006, because nothing works on it at all".
