They gave a presentation at my lab. Their argument for the tether was, if you're going to tie a rope to the robot, why not send power and data over it? That way, it's not going to run out of batteries, go out of controller range or lose video signal. And, if you still manage to get it stuck, you can give the tether a good tug.
