Security Operation Centers in MSSP's often hire young new grads as junior roles. 2-3 yrs in there and you come out knowing more than 10yrs in the customer sector. Its a very good short cut to being the all knowing Sec Geek you've always dreamed of. Helps if you have an unquenchable thrist for knowledge and arent scared of some hard work.
People - Japan has been offering 100mb fiber connections to the house as of 3 yrs ago. Its now only $50 USD per month. That 100mb up and down with 5 Global IP's
ADSL here is at 50mb
VDSL is at 50mb
Cable is at 40mb
Cisco will need to do alot more than merely make a marketing statement about becomming a security company. At the moment its security tech 9other than the RSA competative one) isnt that fantastic. You look at its inability to think ahead on the IDS side of things and youll see what Im talking about. Cisco waits for you to be hacked before it thinks about making signaturess for its IDS (Slammer, Blaster etc). CISCO don't even know what that IPS concept is. Thats not the actions of a security company, its more like Government Road-works...
Traditionally (much like Symantec), they have bought their way into market. Unfortunately there isnt much available to buy let alone much worth buying that will deliver them any kind of growable tech. Refer to latest Gartner report.
"Not fired for buying Cisco.." Pfft - sorry, that may only be by companies that don't understand security; they are getting fewer & fewer everyday.
