As a former ChoicePoint employee (I worked there for over 4 years) I am absolutely appalled. It was drilled into our heads that our mission was to "make society safer by the responsible use of the data." Hah!
It is also NOT true that they don't know if your data was accessed. Most products log the searches that were performed for most user types. I know for the products I worked on, I could query the logs to see if my SSN, address, etc. were searched on.
