  1. What about Linux? on lpf Removed From OpenBSD · · Score: 1

    Linux uses ipfilter too. I'm surprised this has been overlooked thusfar. The official ipfilter for Linux 2.4 site went down two days ago, along with documentation and the CVS archive. And yes, iptables is only the frontend to ipfilter in the kernel. iptables is not a firewall in itself.

  2. Concentrate on getting it right on Mozilla 1.0 Delayed Again · · Score: 4
    Quite frankly, Mozilla is usable for day-to-day home use now. I would much rather the Mozilla team take as much time as they deem necessary to reach a "1.0" release, rather than end up with another Netscape 6 debacle. If you find Moz too slow, or just don't want to try anything prior to 1.0, Konqueror is quite good. Opera is OK if you can get past the clutter and stand that it's proprietary, and one of the Gecko-embedded projects like Gaelon or K-Meleon might be more up your alley.

    If all else fails, there's always w3m, lynx and links - pure content, no frills :)

    There are already several good browsers for Linux. And Mozilla will be around long after nobody can remeber just quite what Internet Explorer actually used to be.

    Not surprising for something that has never moved.

  4. A flaw in your reasoning on Actionscript: The Definitive Guide · · Score: 2

    Java is an open standard. Sure there are open Java implementations like Kaffee (sic) but none of them are worth their weight in salt (and electrons are light)! In a similar vein, no matter how free and easy it is to create Flash animations, if you have to use a proprietary viewer to view them, then there is indeed no free implementation.

  5. Flash is a dead end on Actionscript: The Definitive Guide · · Score: 2

    Flash animations only frustrate end users. Sure, it's not fair to judge a technology by its misuses, but it's difficult to avoid thinking of all those awful Flash based sites 'designed' by people who can't be bothered to learn html. But my main problem with Flash is that there's no Free Software implementation which means it can't be bundled with Debian. The Web is all about open standards, and we shouldn't really be allowing proprietary systems like this to make it big.

  6. License on Swarmcast GPLed · · Score: 5

    Sure, their client may be under the GPL but some of the terms on their license agreement are quite unpleasant:

    (a) Reverse assemble, reverse compile, or reverse engineer the Gateway (or any component or portion thereof), or otherwise attempt to discover any underlying Proprietary Information (defined below) of the Gateway;

    Isn't reverse engineering explicitly granted by law?

    (b) Sublicense, rent, sell, lease or otherwise transfer the Gateway (or any portion thereof) to any third party;

    (c) Remove or alter any marks or designations indicating the ownership of copyrights, trademarks or other intellectual property rights of any party contained in the Gateway;

    In fact I'd go so far as to say these conditions wouldn't feel out of place in a Microsoft EULA.

  7. Kernel compile as a benchmark on Intel Releases Xeon, Look At Those Kernels Compile · · Score: 2
    with default options obtained by running 'make menuconfig' and exiting without changing any values. You could also type 'make config'

    Of course, make oldconfig would do the job just as well.

    Incidentally, Linux 2.5 will feature CML2, developed by ESR and friends, to make the configure and compile process more dynamic. The number of threads to be used will no longer have to be specified by the user as the system will discover this automatically.

  8. MP3.com legal troubles? on Vivendi To Acquire MP3.com · · Score: 1

    Why would Vivendi want to buy mp3.com in the shadow of their legal battle with the RIAA in which they were sued for more than their net value? It doesn't make business sense.

  9. Useless technology on "Not a Mini-Spy" · · Score: 1
    The watch registers what its wearer hears every minute of the day. Its inbuilt computer then identifies from which radio or television program the sound is coming. At week's end, the watch is collected by ACNielsen and its data put into a central computer.

    The sad part is that many people will buy this just because it sounds cool. Just like they buy Sony Memory sticks, WinCE palmtops ... and so on.

  10. Nothing new here on Sony Announces PVR PC · · Score: 2

    This is the kind of produt that Hauppauge are offering with their WinTV PVR. It's really nothing special - just a standard TV card and software that captures and compresses the video and writes it to hard drive. I have been doing this for many years with an old WinTV PCI card and the excellent vcr program for Linux. All Sony are doing is riding the PVR hype with this one, and it seems that they're succeeding.
