Sorry boss, but I have a life, and it isn't my job. I know the folks who keep up with the grape vine in my department, and I talk to them just enough to figgure out what is going on here. Those who work with me closely know where I'm the expert, and I know the experts I normally work with. I know that this product must do something useful, but it doesn't matter, my job is to make sure the fans are running, and if not warn the customers. I don't need to know anything about what the customer would buy this box for. I know mky co-workers are smart people and will see their part works, and the grapevine people are watching over the whole thing to make sure I can spend my time working with fans (and many related things), not worring about how I will affect them.
There are only so many man-months in my life, and If I had to personally know everyone on this project The number avaiable for me to concentrate on fans is greatly reduced.
I like to fish. I like enjoy creating a program. I don't enjoy talking to many people or meeting new people. I know folks who do enjoy that type of work, and so I let them be my connection to the rest of the company. It works good for all of us.
Fortunatly my boss knows that I work to feed and shelter me. We would both be retired if we didn't have to eat and have warm cloths on our backs. We both have friends who do not work in the same building as us. We both know that we spend about half our waking hours at work already.

Well, to some extent, but I find that after spending 8 hours a day at a programing job I'm sick of comptuers, and no longer want to do the codeing I want to do. To put it anouther way, I love programing, but I don't want to spend all my time programing, I also want to spend time fishing, playing mandolin, reading (I love history, bioragiphes, fiction amoung others) playing with the neightbor kids, building something physical, and like many geeks I harbor this desire to meet a girl worth dating.
Programing fits in my life, if I wasn't paid to program I'd probably do it. However I'm paid to program, and that overfills my life's need for programing. Hence I'd love to retire or find a job doing something else.

So assuming you are in the US, don't worry abouyt being sued for you views, despite DeCSS, most juries in the US are unwilling to convinct anyone for views they disagree with. Make sure you counter sue for legal fees if anyone trys.
In high school I was an editor (Layout, not grammer, nor reporter). I went to a seminar on the law and school newspaper (accually I wanted a different one, but that one was cancled so I took what I could) According to him, a private school can censor their school sponsered newspaper. A public school cannot, and this lawyer would love to take your case if you go to a public school and the school or principal trys to censor you or your paper in any way. (There are probably limits, but they would be language not content).
Remember americans take the first ammendment more seriously then any other. This works to your advantage, typically you will win any case before you enter a court room. School lawyers know this and will typically settle. The school however is hoping you don't make a legal stink about it, but you should. Most school newspapers are members of a journlism convention (I forget the name) who would love to put you in contact with the right people to help.
In the USSR while Stalin ruled lititure of any sort was illegal unless it was in praise of communism, Stalin, or other approved subjects. Yet after stalin died several authors were discoverd to have written quality works for "For the desk drawer". That is they wrote books that they never expected to see the light of day because the urge to create was so strong.
The goal is to have no eyeballs look at this until it is ratified. This increases our chance that once they force this down everyone's throats someone can find a hole.
Remember, if the system is really secure there isn't much we as hackers can do. 128 bit encryption is 128 bit encryption, and baring major advances is unbreakable to hackers. Let the music industry get a strangle hold on the people with a new standard and there isn't much we can do to lossen it technologicaly.
Of course there is the other way to look at this: help make this standard as secure as possibal. Then keep reminging people that you used to be able to copy music for your own purposes, and legally you still can. When people get mad congress does listen, and they can force the industry to release the ability for everyone to take advantage of fair use. Grass roots politics is where things get done in the US, so join a political party that mostly thinks like you, and get things done. (It doesn't have to be the republicrats, but a major party gives you a better shot of getting your canidate elected in exchange for some lesser issues going against you)

I'm a bit cynical because I work for a company that does a excellent job of selling high end devices. (ie mainframe) Several times we have bought or built a product that could have sold well in the low end market, but our sales force was unable to sell it. When they look at the ability to make 6 figgures when only closing 4 sales a year, and compare that with the amount of work they need to get any commission on a $1000 box they don't care about the small boxes.
In other words, I'm not really surprized that sun did well with the high end products, but I'm not convinced they can make the low end work.
I've read about half of the books in the top 20 list. Of thsoe I've read, I've seen some of the worst books human kind has ever come up with, books that I didn't enjoy but saw no reason to ban, and books that were The best classics humankind has ever written. Of the rest, from the titles I can say that to me 3/4ths of those left will be in the first catagory, and most of the rest in the second. my local small town book store has a web site where I can enter the ISBN for any (in print or at least avaiable) book and they will put it in their next order. I pick it up there, but since it is in town it isn't a big deal (and I don't worry about it arriving in the rain). I pay sales tax, but avoid shipping. I support a small town book store that gives me a place to look over books for those that are worth reading.
Ahh, but you miss the point: Amazon ships the product and charges the inflated price. At this point they get the money from your credit card. They invest the extra, and 2 months latter refund it. So they do get access to your money for that time.
Note that the above is somewhat a moot point becuase AFAIK Amazon.com is still losing money on most/all sales.

Yes you can start from scratch and write you own educational program. If you have the time, please do. Might I suggest a generic game engine that can be used to write Myst like games for linux. It appears to me that most educational games a based on Myst on the high level, (but with a lot more things to click on, and more obvious solutions) with sub games. Let an artist make the game screens and play. This allows linux to get many educational games once you get your engine working.
Appearently you payed for prints to. $12 is a typical price for a 36 exp roll, and 72 4x6 prints. Tell them you don't want prints (come back latter to get the good ones printed), and you bring the price way down.
You can also devolpe them yourself, but unless you take a lot of pictures your not going to save money. (But you know it was done right)
Isn't there a safety issue in the petro station when your car pulls up with a hot exhaust pipe sitting low to the ground? There should be millions of gas station explosions a day if there is any risk, as any concentration of gas fumes strong enough to explode (which is accually a relativly narrow range of concentration compared to most explosives) would be easally ignited by those high tempatures.
The speed of light in normal wire is about 1/2 the speed of light.
The speed of an election in a wire is on the order of a meter a minute. Think of it like a garden hose: a water molicule in the hose takes a while to get out, but if the hose is full of water turning on the valve results in instant water flow. It normally takes a while to get all the old water out of the hose before you get fresh. (This is perhaps better seen in your shower)
This is freshman physics, and I highly recomend all geeks spend a year in college taking basic science course like this one.
About 5 years ago I saw at an amature radio show a little box that mounted in a (empty) 5-1/4 disk drive bay. It then had everything you need to put headphone a headphone jack on the front of your case.
Personally I'd buy a USB hub (and other USB gear, see other posters) and put it on my desktop. Then I'd head to radio shack and rig up a sound hub on my desk.

Work for your congrtessman as staff.
(Assuming your not lieing) you seem to have a lot of contact with your congress person. Now broaden your issues a bit, and decide which canidate for congress most fits your broad ideals. Work with him to get him ellected. Knock on doors. Write (for him) reasoned positions on geek issues. After spending all day in congress (either the general session or committie meetings) congressmen do not really have time to become educated on all issues. They hire staff that generally thinks like them to help them understand the issues fast. Staff is often hired from the ranks of those who helped with the campaign.
So if you work to get someone elected, make it known that you'd like a staff job (but don't come across too heavy) you have a chance of being the one who opens constituants letters (for summery), and a chance to read and contribute to bills. Remember your congressman cannot read and understand every bill (with ammendments) that come along. So if the bill is on a subject he knows nothing about but one staffer has strong feelings about (either ammendments that are needed, or just plain vote against) you have influence.
It is your job to watch out for your child, not a retailer's. If you raise her well, with a relatively moral upbringing, then by the time she is interested in "inappropriate stuff", she'll be able to handle it or simply choose not to purchase it.
I know many kids, some good, some bad. Some had excellent homes, some did not. There is some corrolation, but not much there.
In other words, I know kids that were raised by the best, most well meaning and moral parents who turned out bad. I know kids who were raised by parents that didn't care what the kid did, yet the kid turned out well. (I mean the parent wouldn't have cared if the kid went on a murder spree) No in general kids raised in a bad enviroment turn out worse then those raised in a good enviroment, but there are far too many exceptions for me to belive your arguement that well raised kids will make the right choices, some will.
At the (arbitary) age of 18 socity has generally decided that you should no be able to make your own decisions. (except alcahol) Since there is no known test that we can apply to everyone to find out if they are mature enough to make good choices that is the best we can do. Other socities/countries have placed the limits elsewhere, but they still have a comming of age at some time or anouther.

First of all, if you have a problem with the food, it means you haven't tried. We consider ourselves a melting pot of all cultures, which means you can get food from just about any culture. You have to look though, the best restaruants are small mom and pop operations, and they don't have an advertising budget other then word of mouth. Often the store looks dirty, but the food is wonderful. There are many good Mexican restaruants around, even in Minnesota I can find a couple, but if you head to Taco Bell you won't find it, even though Taco bell is the dominate player in the Mexican resteraunt buisness.
Don't forget too that you can cook your own. Supermarkets in the US are unrivialed with anything in the world. Some do better then others, but for most of your staples (rice, flour, etc) they can't be beat. Small specialtiy stores (meat markets, etc) make up the difference where they exist. Learn to cook your own food! American cooks tend to love tinkering with the old world recipies, and the ingreadiants to do so are avaiable, if you just try.
Check that $500 hammer story, that is a reasonable price for that hammer. (Accually I think it was $600)
What the media story never mentions is the hammer is needed in an enviroment where explosives are used. The hammer was made of a special non-sparking metal so that it could be safely used.
