There are definitely people who take stuff like this site for granted. Everything has to be paid for somehow and ad supported is one way to do this if people don't want to pay a subscription fee.
However, there is a very large difference between an ad at the top (though I would much rather they used the even less obtrusive google ads, which I actually don't block) and popup ads which not only infect your computer (or result from infections) and are a huge annoyance.
