It auto-enabled the firewall and I was none too pleased, as I was installing remotely.
OTOH if it didn't enable the firewall automatically it would get bashed, perhaps they should provide some sort of method for powerusers to configure what's going to be done automatically, such as an INF file in the same directory as the installer.
Well, after I plugged it back into the firewall, I ran IE and there was a mywebsearch toolbar. I probably did something slightly wrong when securing the system, or possibly it got infected somehow as I was installing the protection, but should a system be this hard to secure in the first place?
No idea.. it just- happened.
I too have had an SP2 system connected to the internet directly with no problems. Maybe a security fix actually introduced a new exploit or something. It was about a day after running windows update that I connected it to the net.
In my experience, it seems to be a bit of luck, some of my installs have been flawless for their entire lifetime, but some just die within a day, usually without any human interaction.
I just got a new laptop that I had to install with XP for somebody. From behind a firewall, I installed SP2 and all patches.
Just to test that it was secure , I plugged it into the net directly... bad idea.
Less than 10 minutes and it was full of spyware- I don't know how it got in, I didn't even start IE. Guess it's time for a reinstall- this time I'll just install a decent firewall and give it back to them.
Reminds me of a time when I used XP ICS for a quick job, and before I knew it, the 3 computers on the network were exploited, even though they were behind the ICS.
Now that's security!

I have Windows XP SP2 on another computer, and it's never been infected. As I said, I'm not sure what happened.

Maybe it's so that the US Govt can patch their systems before hackers get their hands on the patch and reverse engineer it to exploit others.
