"if it wasn't for Microsoft, we would probably still be using IBM PC's."
You meant to say the Amiga, right? But in that case, Linux and BSD would also have had no competition.
...once you save an ODF imported document into Word, that it saves it as.doc (as in "Word.doc", not "OO.doc" nor "ODF.doc").
I mean, until someone states OTW, I will continue to believe the same. Until there is an option in Word that says "ODF Format only", and then unhighlights all of the toolbars that are not ODF compatible, automatically.
I've been using ActivePerl these past two weeks - not that I haven't before.
The install is so quick, it's forgettable. Never have had any problems using ActivePerl. Yes, I am glad there is a co. that stands behind it.
Perl is awesome, but if left to the whim of fate on Windows, I fear the angry mob of Python, Ruby, whatever is new and thinking it's better than everything before it type thinking. I am glad that Perl proves itself worthy.
It's better to call to businesses, I think, force them to deal with you (instead of an email inbox). If they are using a SW ticketing system, and you forgot your address and so they had to use contact info. from a previous order, well, I've worked in customer service with a ticketing system at a co. recently, so I don't think you are lying. It works a lot better when all of the information is entered correctly the first time, a whole lot better.
Yeah, I like that other guy's suggestion of just buying the box through a retailer. All you were trying to do in this case was purchase a product. But buying SW, in general, sounds kinda scary because it seems no retailer has return policies on opened software.
And another thing. If MS wanted to kill Mono, would't it just be easier to buyout Miguel de Icaza? Who has more bucks, MS or Novell? what if they just decided to payoff Novell?
Is RAND the way they would do it? Do you really think MS is going to try and squeeze blood from a stone?
My perception is that Mono jumps on the fact that Java wasn't open-sourced.
Yes, Miguel plays it up that programs written on Windows can be ported to Linux, but this seems like a total red-herring to me.
I may be way off base w/Miguel's intentions, but Mono doesn't necessarily need to continue following the.net framework.
The real win seems to be GTK#, and just C# - not laching on to everything that MS does with their framework.
I may be wrong, but if Mono is a "submarine", I don't think it's going to submarine Gnome. Why is WINE still kicking? Why can Linux implement an interface that Unix used? That was kind of the whole premise behind Linux in the first place, same interface different implementation.
based on whether Dell were planning to offer Linux Enterprise desktops or laptops.
Who would have more of an interest in a Linux distro than a company that images hard-drives or creates recovery CD's for their own proprietary HW systems?

Goooooooooo Linux! :-D
