Microsoft wants everyone to believe that their TCO is lower than Linux when everyone knows it's not. By funding/writing misleading press releases, they can further blur (in the general public's mind) the lines that don't exist.
This is exactally what smoking companies and plenty of others do. Nothing new here.
Nothing in science is "proven", bleckywelcky. That's what the scientific method is. A theory can gain more and more evidence, but once a test turns up against the theory, it has to be thrown away by the wayside.
To put this in comparison:
Would you rather
A) Fly on a plane that has never crashed
B) Fly on a plane that has never been tested?
Instead of sending $100~$200 off to Microsoft, then spending even more on maintanence, I think schools should use linux instead, or another open OS. Not only will they cut back 200 bucks for not using Windows, but upkeep requires less time, and less employese. Plus they could make "distracting" things unavailable to students. I'm sure if they compared the same test students running Linux w/ such configuration the students would do better then those running Windows.
Guarentee it.
I actually like the panel in linux (FC3: KDE specifically) better then the borring Windows task bar. It is much mroe customizable: give it a right click and add some things. Custom menues, quick buttons, Sound Mixer (3D Depth and Center make music in Linux awsome), etc. In GNOME I especially like the eyes. It looks more like a work envirement then KDE and can even display the current weather.
If you want the panel to look like Windows, I'm sure you can acomplish this. More power to you if you want your settings to look plain;P

It was a 'fad' until Microsoft realized other people were making money off it.
