So to start at boot I have to figure out this whole chmod 755 rc.whatever thing? Yep too difficult, what I really need is some extremely bloated, one size fits all pile of crap that only a machine can edit.
BTW cron works just fine. If it doesn't work its usually caused by a malfunction in the script its told to run. Cron is just fine, however many of the people using it are severely b0rked.
Just use RSA SecurID and forget about it. Only problem is changing codes every thirty seconds is just too much time. I mean I can almost get all 20 numbers in just before it changes. Thats way too convenient.
Holy shit. I'm actually arguing with one of these kiddie Kubuntu users. Go click on something pretty, junior, and leave the conversation to the adults, please.
It is a well established fact that the 2.6 kernel is fatter than the 2.4 dumbass. the point is for some people thats ok (the kind of people who run KDE in all its lard ass, RAM chewing glory) and for some of us its just not acceptable.
Yeah you've mastered grep but still dont know how to set your bash prompt. Looking around at the other posts comparing sizes as well as my own experience you are either...
a) full of crap
b) running a 2.6 kernel which doesn't do much more than make the hard disk spin
Anyone want an example of unstable and b0rked? Not a problem. All my systems from my P133 all the way up to my AMD 2800+ are still running 2.4 kernels. My first experience with 2.6 just happened to be on an Intel 600 with i810 video and the kernel 2.6.9. Ran terrific unless I wanted anything more than CLI becuase while some jackass was implementing new "features" they happened to break the i810 video driver which has been stable and rock solid since the dawn of time.
Bloat? sure I got that one too. I have this crazy habit of checking my kernel size after every compile. With the same hardware, same config. 2.4.27 was 1.1M, 2.6.9 was 1.9M. Just under 2 megs for a stripped kernel? I'll be damned.
If the majority of users wants a fatter, less stable kernel because it offers better support for their webcam, great. I'll be happily moving along with the 2.4 kernels.
Why the hell is this modded insightful? If you go to the link and actually scroll to the bottom you can reply to any post on this particular forum using any name you want. Yeah its really Torvalds. By the way, keep reading that rag cause Linus is about to say some funny shit. Well it has his name on it anyway..
This is hardly shocking coming from a commercial software vendor and honestly doesn't really affect things that much. It creates two possible scenarios which both work just fine.
1) an alternative system is found and development goes on as usual.
2) no other alternative can handle the job so BitMover has effectively challenged one of the greatest hackers of all time to develop a replacement which kicks the shit out of BK and development continues as usual.
Could this be because after only 12 years Slackware still has no friggin package management system?
I don't see anyone at freebsd.org, gentoo.org or, debian.org crying about how hard to gnome is to build and all three of my boxes are humming along just fine with beautiful gnome desktops. Slackware can go to hell or wherever it is defunct unused Linux distros go when they get too lazy to continue making decent releases.
Yup, that's about the most intelligent reply one could expect from a windows user. And "I" don't administer any windows servers. Read the name UN1XG0D. I won't be associated with such a pathetic excuse for an OS.
No counter argument needed. Anyone with half the common sense of a toaster can see through this load of BS.
Binary compatibility: Because we all know it will do you so much good to run Word 97 on Windows XP
Support: Haven't called Microsoft's support line lately have ya?
Oh Please. More 'Security through Obscurity' FUD. I work in a data center with about 8000 Linux server and around 200 Windows servers. The windows boxes get hacked 3 times more often than the Linux boxes. Of course these are just web servers. We all know the real hackers are going after desktops and cracking your pron collection. right?
And I just got through installing 5.3 on my work box. Guess I'll be cvsup'ing tonight.
you might suggest they all install Service Pack UNIX. This will fix the problem quite nicely.
An AC without a shred of common sense. Those are so difficult to find on Slashdot.
That is what atd is for
root@darkstar:/etc/rc.d# ls

And Dead Cat gets gets one step closer to being officially flaming gay. Not really a big shock.

But of course, since I'm not going along with the idiotic masses and insist on using common sense and facts I MUST be a troll. Grow up

Shoot yourself in the foot? Of course, because capital G's are used so much on the command line. O well, zsh it is. Good luck anyway.
alias -g G='|grep' works like a regular alias but anywhere on the command line ie. ps aux G sshd
err but does it do global aliases? if so I may consider testing it out. Till then its zsh or nothin

My bad then. Hadn't noticed you got modded.
Don't think I ever said the word troll, however no matter how many times you use the word assert, it doesn't mean you actually have a clue

I'd say Linux is about as mainstream as it get for server. Don't beleive me? Look here <URL:http://news.netcraft.com/archives/web_server_ survey.html>
That is if Internet Exploder doesn't invite some truly devious shit into your box along the way and fry it.

While Linux and BSD will always run my boxes, Solaris 10 does have that special place right between my beer and the coffee table.
