I can't comment on Astronomy but I can on Computer Science and I use Scholar on a regular basis. The alternative is CiteSeer, refered to in the article as "awesome". Well its definitely, not that! I am often greeted with "System Busy" messages and it can be a very frustrating process. After reading that it was hard to take the article seriously, that's not to say that Scholar can't be improved.
Of course, the ACM and IEEE offer better services for me, as you would expect given the fact money is involved, but Scholar is one of many useful tools and especially for students as it is free.

This has clearly been documented before. I'm surprised it has not been fixed after all this time. The slashdot post and the clsc.net page gave me the impression this was something new.
