I got the Titanium alloy X-Metal sunglasses from Oakley...and what do I like best about them? Airport metal detectors ignore them!

Actually, the concept is not really that titanium will replace aluminum but that it will be in the same order of magnitude in price. Where the price really makes the difference and where the real usefulness will be is in large objects. Bridges that don't rust, supertankers that are stronger, ultra-tall skyscrapers, jumbo jets that can take more load before the wings fall off (ok, that is an aluminum replacement...I wonder if they'll be able to do a loop?)

  4. Madness on IT Stress In The Workplace · · Score: 1

I'm a field tech for a very large retail computing company (we fix cash registers/systems). The work is insanely grueling in that you have the absolute worst users you can possibly imagine (cashier: "Ah dunno, it's just broken..duh") and the hectic pace of pizza delivery to boot (I know, I've been there). With pagers, cell phones, laptop wireless and all other forms of nagging, it's a wonder we get anything done. "When are you going to be there? It's the third call back already! Midnight? No sooner?!?". Oftentimes the day feels like being the proverbial rat in the cage, just waiting for the next sharp stick to be poked in. I oftentimes feel deleterious health effects from the stress. (quaking rage...I often wonder how I avoid shouting at the customers). Our team status is approx. 50% what we need; management won't let us hire more...they already early retired our best guys...some of my coworkers wouldn't know NT if it bit them on the ass...ok, calm down now...ahhhh.
The Ignorance of The Masses regarding technology can be such a frustration when you are forced to actually deal with such Masses. They regard it as some sort of magic when they even deem to think about it, "But why can't you just ...whatever...make it woooork?"
I love technology, and have a lot of friends (though not lately...too busy working :-( ) and am socially adept...but I feel that the bad side of dealing with the stress of tech support is ruining my attitude on life and people. Yea, I know I should get another job. But as said elsewhere in this thread, the pay is good. Anyone else have similar experiences?

Ummm, I finally got the Darwin tools downloaded so as to try this...pretty cool!
    But this is what happens:

    [localhost:/Users/thesquid] root# make foo
    cc foo.c -o foo
    foo.c:1: `#include' expects "FILENAME" or <FILENAME>
    make: *** [foo] Error 1

Hmmm, I'm just starting out fooling around with this stuff, so don't laugh...but what filename goes with #include? Something ain't right here.

The graphics engine uses several different methods to display things; bit-mapped graphic and vector elements are easily used in the same screen/window elements. If you want a full-blown explanation of how the imaging engine works (it's pretty cool) head on over to this article about the OSX display system at Arstechnica
