  1. Even more interestingly... on Will Legalities Choke Off Online Volunteerism? · · Score: 2

Other companies are running scared at the suit against AOL. Check out this article on Origin cancelling its Ultima Online volunteers' free accounts and making them take a mandatory 3 month break after 1 year of work. (The point at which an employee is considered full-time.)

  2. What a ridiculous article. on The Computer of 2010 · · Score: 2

The premise of that article is entirely ridiculous. About 2/3rds of the "technologies of the future" have a date of availibility listed as "2010 (With luck!)"

Hell, I may as well say "With luck, we'll all have robot maids and hovercars like the Jetsons in 2010," because it's about as solid a prediction as the writer of that articles's.

Assuming all of these technologies are released exactly on-schedule, they will be prohibitively expensive (Ex: Any new processor for about 2 months) and poorly implemented in the software-side (Ex: USB in Windows 95).

Not to mention the 'appearance' of the computer of the future. Apparently, in 10 years, our computers will be comprised primarily of colorful rectangles and circles. Neat.

  5. I'd say linux is less virus-friendly... on Garfinkel Warns Of Linux Virus "Epidemic" · · Score: 2

...not because Linux has superior virus detection, but because the average Linux user won't execute a file named "HAPPYFUN.EXE" that's emailed from someone he doesn't know. Please excuse the generalization, but the average Linux-user is much more computer saavy than the average Win95/98 user. Plus, the open source spirit does a lot to cut down on a virus. It's very difficult to hide a virus in source code. "Hmm, what's this stretch of uncommented assembly language?"

  6. Terry Pratchett rules. on The Truth · · Score: 4

Slightly off-topic, but if you're new to Pratchett, there are a couple of things to know.

Pratchett has a couple of different subjects that he bases his books on. I break them up into 5 categories: Death, Witches, Rincewind, the Watch, and Miscellaneous.

    Starting points for each category:

Death: "Mort" - The "Death" storylines tend to focus on Discworld's Death and his (adopted) grand-daughter, Susan. Death gets notions into his head regarding humans and wackiness ensues.

Witches: "Equal Rites" - The "Witches" storylines focus on a trio of small-town witches and their escapades. I consider these to be the least interesting.

Rincewind: "The Color of Magic" - Rincewind is the worst wizard in the world. He and whatever companions he can find go on, once again, wacky misadventures and tend to save the world. Rincewind is the definitive Pratchett character; he's a craven, cowardly wizard who keeps inadvertently doing the right thing while trying to save his own hide. Definitely my favorites.

Guards: "Guards! Guards!" - Commander Vimes and his watchmen solve the mysteries of Ankh-Morpork, the primary city of Pratchett's books. The character evolution in these books is incredible. I love all of these books.

Miscellaneous: I liked "Good Omens" (written with Neil Gaiman) a lot. There are lots of others, though.

Enjoy your Pratchett experience; I'm very happy that I accidentally discovered him in a used bookstore.

  7. Simple solution: Parents actually parenting. on Maybe Video Games Don't Make Kids Kill · · Score: 2

Hostage down? Who cares, he'll be back next round! Some concepts of violence in video games will rub off on kids. Ratings won't stop the eight year old AOL pirates."

If a parent isn't watching his 8 year old child, then the PARENT should be arrested when the kid shoots people. I grew up watching Looney Toons and whatnot, then later, playing Nintendo games. Every step of the way, I had a parent over my shoulder teaching me the fundamental lessons of life and morality. I play Unreal Tournament a lot, but if you met me, you'd find me to be totally laid back. I rarely get angry, and I am not violent.

Wile E Coyote did not warp my mind by blowing himself up, the same way Wolfenstein 3d didn't give me the idea that Nazism is okay.

I also used mIRC 4.x until about two weeks ago, and Netscape 3 for an eternity. I recently picked up IE5, though.

It just proves that it's dangerous to adopt new versions of programs too soon. Hopefully with several years of buffer time to let all those bugs get worked out.

    Eudora Lite 1.5.2 forever!

Seriously, though, I think this poll will be (like many, many polls) a representation of the uninformed public's views, rather than any sort of indication of any legal precedent. I'd like to see the CNN poll as a Slashdot poll.

Of course, then, the poll would be totally biased against Microsoft.

The end of the book is rather interesting, where Clarke gives a description of a building completely coated in diamond.

My memory is sketchy on it, but I recommend reading all 4 of the Odyssey books (2001, 2010, 2064, and 3001), the movie 2001 didn't do the book justice... and it was a damn good movie.
