Unless the entire world sent emails on the 21st, I don't think it would have even slowed the NSA's computers a bit. In an excerpt from the NSA's web page of facts and figures, Here
NSA is the Baltimore Gas Electric (BGE) company's 2nd largest customer, and the 2nd largest user of electrical power in Maryland. NSA's yearly electrical bill is more than $21 million. Under a partnering agreement, in exchange for an annual credit to the NSA electric bill, BGE can request NSA to operate on-site emergency generators to produce electrical power during severe peak demand periods. This significant partnership with NSA allows BGE to serve additional customers and decreases the need for "rolling blackouts" in the area during peak demand periods.
I don't have a very good idea of how many computers that is, but it seems like an awful lot of power, including the backup generators. --
number modulus 26 minus 5, correct? now that there is more than one answer that seems correct, these hints will probably give it away, especially considering that we geeks figured it out within the first hour, if some didn't start before the story was written --
But wait. After all, didn't they say that it was easy, and that you could solve it with very little experience? I do have the same feeling you do, however; it does seem very easy.
This is just my opinion, but maybe he's just sick of hearing it. If people are constantly talking about your wealth to the extent that you get sick of it, you won't respond in a way that shows any kind of sense of humour. --
think about it: if you are a large multinational credit card company, why in the world would you want bad publicity from "some California girl" who could possibly win in the courtroom, and in turn cause customers to lose their faith in the company? that's the main, if not only, reason there are settlements in the business world anyway, to prevent bad publicity. --
When I code, or am on the computer in general, I set random play on in xmms and pop up the seperate window spectrum analyzer. I usually listen to Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Metallica, RATM, Ozzy, some techno stuff, the Doors, the Rolling Stones, REM, Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, and Creed, along with things I find that I like. --

Even KDE 1.1.1 lets me log into slashdot. I didn't have to do anything special, either. I have Konqueror set up to warn me for cookies, I saved my login in a cookie and now every time I'm logged in. And I agree, I hate having to load up slow netscape everytime I go to a javascript site. I don't see why we're hanging onto Mozilla like this. --
Schools SHOULD promote agnosticism, but that is not always the case. I know people who go to public high schools that have teachers that play favorites with the students from religious families and treat the atheist students like crap. In a perfect world, schools would be perfect, too. Oh well. --
