Bear in mind that this discussion is about the EU. Personally I think it would be better to look at quality of life indicators when comparing the two. The EU countries thrash the states when you do this, largely because we have universal healthcare, and a third of US citizens have no health insurance. It should also be noted that the EU GDP is roughly comparable to that of the US.
"Free market economies rock." Just a small point but some people actually think that the UK, Netherlands and Ireland have freer markets than the US.
