  1. Linux can't hack it? on Dvorak On Linux And "The Big Time" · · Score: 1
The story would have more bite if it wasn't such an uninformed opinion. As we all know, there are several high volume sites running Linux -- sites handling millions of hits a day.

Sure, other OSs (such as Solaris and FreeBSD) seem to be a bit more prevelant -- but I wouldn't say the reason is "Linux can't handle it".

Interestingly, while checking out the article on PC Mag's website, I came across a "Redhat vs. NT" test that shows NT leveling off well before Red Hat (both OS's were not tuned in this test). Guess someone forgot to pass those results along to John.

The article smells a bit fishy to me, but everyone's entitled to an opinion I suppose.

  2. Re:How about FreeBSD? on Ask Slashdot: Art, Linux and the Slashdot Effect? · · Score: 1

FreeBSD is definitely worth looking at, but don't make the assumption that it's more efficient than Linux just because Yahoo is using it.

I'd say Yahoo is using FreeBSD because they felt it was the best option to them at the time they put Yahoo together.

I'd also say they're running it on 1000 servers, and have a lot of engineers who know FreeBSD inside and out. Why switch now unless there's a really good reason?

If they were putting Yahoo together today, they'd probably seriously consider Linux.

Yes, I'd say they are definitely more advanced than the average /.'er. To think otherwise would be pretty naive.

BTW, your comment about "they don't develop their own technology" is a bit off.

Yes, they use Crays -- but they also have super computers that they develop in house (in whole or in part). One notable one they call "The Thinking Machine" was specifically designed and developed for crypto operations.
