  1. Re:Python - designed for teaching on Best Way to Get Kids Started in Programming? · · Score: 1

In addition, the Python core lib includes a Turtle class that uses Tk. Once the kid graduates (get frustrated with) the turtle, take him/her straight into Tk's Canvas and then simply Tk.

  2. Emotion + iLink = Beowulf potential on High-end Computer or Game Machine? · · Score: 1

With the vector processing of the emotion,
with the nuon processor doing the management,
    and the IEEE1394 iLink,
stacking a few PSX2s will make for a helluva
    parallel system.
Even at $500/box, that sill slaughters
most other methods I've heard of.
I imagine Becker and NASA will be all over it.

It's justa big friggin box taking up space.

out of sight; rf mouse & keyboard,

  4. suit term: "Business model" on Feature:A Brave New World · · Score: 1

In suit-world, the term "Business model" scares the heeby-jeebies out of me. Especially since the PC "business model" is "trending" toward the cell-phone "business model."
    [enough with the quotes already]

Why should you care? Money and information.
Cell phone users have money, and they regularly give it away to pay off their outrageous cell phone bills. Computer users have money, and they usually pay the outrageous MS tax.

What suits want in addition to your money is your information. They'll offer you free email service so that they can have your information; hell, they'll sell you a computer if they can have your information and shove their information down your throat.

We MUST make certain Linux stays free, and is a success. This might show the suits that the industry is not trending toward the cell phone model. We must show that that we will pay for the tangible hardware, but we'll make our own software and share it. And you can have my information when you pry it from my cold, dead, encrypted filesystem.

  5. using QNX means x86 on Amiga Development Update · · Score: 1

QNX can run on small embedded systems on up to full SMP machines and multicomputer networks. It is a technicaly impressive OS.

To date, it only runs on the x86. This means that unless the Amiga folks did a port (unlikely),
the next Amiga will run on x86 clone PCs.

and yes, it seems a direct challenge to BeOS.
I love Be Inc., but the BeOS doesn't become
a seemingly-single parallel computer when muliple BeOS-boxen are networked together like QNX can.

  7. Alpha's great, make sure you get a cache on Alphas get Cheaper? · · Score: 1

Thanks to Samsung, there are now cheap Alphas in quantity. However, just make sure it's not a 21164PC; these buggers don't have the L2 cache in the package, which is what helps the Alpha haul ass. (can you say Celloweron?)
I'm looking forward to the 21264 (and up) which will have SMP connectivity built in.

  8. DC Power on Ask Slashdot: How do you build a PC for the car? · · Score: 1

Actually DC-AC-DC is more efficient than a straight DC-DC. However, the NatSemi part is recommended, it uses switched capacitors.
Capacitor switching is the electrical equivalent of using flood gates in a canal when changing aquatic elevations (voltages).
