This is not a valid study.
The biggest issue is it selectively choosing search terms which yield less than 1000 results. For instance the query ipod would not count. But perhaps "my monkey broke my ipod in my camry" would count.
Point is the study proves that Google has more results for very obscure queries that yield very little results (1000).
Give it to the NCSA they did they best they could to do a study with whatever information was available. It got people to at least think about it.
