  1. Re:Blue Men will sell the PIV on C`t Throws Athlons And P4s In The Gladiator Pit · · Score: 1

The advert didn't say 'put the holy trinity' in your PC'.. :op

The very term 'the power of three' is linked with Wicca/Pagan mythology, which is why it's known widely enough that they'd drop it in an ad in the first place.

Of course.. I could be reading this wrong. Perhaps Intel hired a Pagan ad agency. ;o>

Now, when we see someone on a cross being used to sell stuff from PC World, then I'll happily stop whining. ;o>

Yes.. I was unfortunate enough to see one of TV here in Scotland last night. It muttered something about the power of three, at which point I turned it over. Any other Wiccans out there that find that really offensive? Would they use things from Christianity to sell computer chips like that? Somehow I doubt it.

  3. Too much ISP protection can be bad! on Excite@Home Claims Broadband 'Safe' · · Score: 1

ADSL provided by BT here in the UK is bad, bad, bad.

The stuff for home users (ie, the stuff that's cheapest) uses NAT on the modem, and you've no choice about it.. and you can't (AFAIK) configure it. (It's bad in other ways too, of course.. like being USB-only and expensive)

Horrible! No servers at all.. if I had DSL or cable I'd want to be running my own mail server, at least.

It's one thing to protect the clueless people, but it's no good when it also cripples those who do know what they're doing.

If ISPs are going to use firewalls to block connections, then it needs to have the option to opt-out (I'd have it on by default to catch those too clueless to help themselves), so that people can use their connection how they like, and take their own risks.

I'd love to be able to get broadband here, but I don't know if I'd bother if they were going to put in random portblocks.

  4. Re:/etc/passwd on Encrypted Filesystems With Linux? · · Score: 1

Your passwords should be one-way encrypted - they're not designed to be decrypted - /ever/.

Things that check passwords just encrypt what you give them, and compare the two encrypted results.

If you're wanting to get passwords, the only realistic option is to run a massive dictionary of words and likely phrases over the passwords and see which match.
If there's good passwords in there, you might never find out what they are...
