  1. Disincentive to increase bandwidth on Policy Wonk Castigates Net Neutrality · · Score: 5, Insightful

Let me see if I'm understanding this.

If there is enough bandwidth then everyone's traffic will get through regardless of Net Neutrality. If there is congestion though, without Net Neutrality only traffic from sites that paid the extortion fee will get through.

Does this not lead to a situation where it is ideal for an ISP to maintain a certain level of congestion at all times in order to ensure that there exists a reason to pay the extortion fee?

One the other hand with Net Neutrality in place it's in the ISP's best interest to maintain an adequate level of bandwidth to make sure everyone's traffic gets through.

  2. Most fiction borrows ideas on Da Vinci Code Author Sued · · Score: 1
This is ridiculous. Is George Lucas going to get sued because he borrowed ideas from an old Japanese movie? How about the elements of Star Wars that are similar to Dune?

Just like ideas that further science build upon previous work, ideas for new fiction don't usually come out of nowhere. People borrow and steal ideas then change them to suit their purposes and add their own thoughts along the way. This is how a lot of great work gets done in many fields.

  3. dt/dt perfectly legit and not necessarily 1 on No Time Travel, Sorry · · Score: 1
dt/dt is perfectly legit as long as you're talking about two different t's.

dx/dx is perfectly legit and not necessarily 1 if for example one of the x's refers to a train and the other one refers to a car whose speeds I'm comparing for whatever reason.

Of course what this means in a physical sense is not so clear.

  4. Duke it out on The Greying of the Mainframe Elite · · Score: 1

There seem to be two disjointed threads here: 1. We work on mainframes and we are elite, so there... 2. Any halfway intelligent college student should be able to work on mainframes, so there... I suggest a few rounds on Soul Caliber to settle the argument.
