Let's just ship old Apple IIs everywhere. They're REALLY cheap and can word process like no one's business. Internet? Bah. Third world internet access sucks anyway.
Sure, Linux has the ability to be "toned down" to run on slower hardware. I think some people got it running on a Mac SE. BFD. If you want a Linux box that's as sharp looking and powerful as OS X, you're going to have to spend a little more money.
And it'll still take 3 days to install...
I'd like to see someone who speaks only Chinese and no English at all install an OS X system and a Linux system and see which takes longer.
First off, print does not work this way. It mixes content and adventising just like traditional web media. If you're referring to full page ads in a magazine or newspaper, I think that's a little different than a 2 or 3 minute TV or radio commercial break.
Secondly, going to a "commercial break" is more beneficial to the content provider (TV and radio) than the advertiser. During a TV or radio break, it is SO EASY for the viewer/listener to switch to another station, get something to eat, take a piss, etc. Integrating with the programming works much better. Why do you think advertisers pay so much for product placement in movies?
The audience trains itself to block out advertising. They hit a full page ad in a newspaper, they skip over it. Seinfeld takes a commercial break, they walk away. Radio says "We'll be right back" customers go away.
Apple is not going to be the next Microsoft because Apple is a hardware company and Microsoft is a software company. It's the SOFTWARE that open source is a "threat" to because you can get for free what Microsoft charges you for. But you still have to buy the hardware.
If the day comes when Apple has no choice but to give away the Mac OS for free, fine. Just so long as you have to buy an Apple machine to run it on, Apple won't care.
(this, btw, is another reason that Apple putting its OS out for non-Apple hardware would be a Bad Thing for Apple)
When I first read the paragraph on Slashdot, I was seriously waiting for the "just kidding" or "early April Fools joke" or SOMETHING. I can't believe those quotes are actually real. I'm just speechless.
Too bad that people that are so rich can also be so dumb.
Many of the figures used in showing how much money businesses use are really off base.
For example, take "cyber slacking", the term often used for employees using the Internet at work for fun, not business. They do some survey where they learn the average person says they spend 30 minutes of their work day "cyber slacking". Then they say the average person get paid $15/hour (or whatever) so that's $7.50 per worker per day. If there's 100 million workers, then business is loosing $750 MILLION DOLLARS A DAY!!!!
Dumb.
Anyway... I hope that's not too off topic but sometimes that's how business thinks. Perhaps with the virus thing they figure out how much their tech people who fix the stuff are paid and then add up the hours spent fixing virus-ridden systems, etc...
What they don't take into account is that those tech guys are probably on salary and if they weren't fixing the virus problem, they'd be doing something else....
Like cyber slacking.:)
Internet appliances? Maybe Apple's not in that market because NO ONE IS BUYING THEM!
Ever since the Internet became popular, people have been talking about all this Internet Appliance crap. We see lots of stuff at computer shows and then it's gone the next year. Replaced by nothing because they just don't sell.
Internet appliances... bah!
Gee, most people have cars in this country, so have we reached the saturation point in cars sales? Everyone sell your stock in GM and Ford!
What about TVs? Almost every man, woman, and child has their own TV. They don't ever even need to be upgraded! (unless you want HDTV) So sell your Sony stock! It's going down!
Even if the majority of households had computers, many families are becoming multi-computer homes. And people always want to upgrade and stuff. Bah, it's all just BS.
How come an industry can be doing great for years and suddenly there's a bad earnings quarter (which is historically a bad quarter anyway) and everyone freaks out?
I recently ordered Telocity for my small business. It should be up and running today and perhaps I'll post an update when I get to work. But this whole process has taken less than a month and I'm fairly pleased, although there has been some snags such as "software problems" on their end that have hindered me from being up and running.
All the hardwiring was done by last week, which would have been only 3 weeks from when I placed my order. Good thing about Telocity is there's no contract. And you get a static IP.
And about different providers saying they can and can't give you DSL... My understanding is different types of DSL can go different distances. I believe the max distance for ADSL (like Earthlink) is 10,000 feet. But for SDSL (like Telocity) it's 18,000 feet.
Remember when the idea that all technologies would merge was the big idea? Your computer would be your TV, entertainment center, video game console, cable box, fridge, and toaster? But the opposite seems to be happening. There's no reason why a computer couldn't do what the Xbox, or Playstation 2, etc, is doing. But instead they're making a separate system. And sure, there are hybrid CD/MP3 players, but they run off burned CDs. There isn't a Rio-style machine that also plays MP3s. TiVo sits alongside my VCR instead of having "merged" with it. My cable box is still separate from my TV and I still have 4 friggin' remotes!:)
Wow... All that babble over a Bible verse in someone's tagline?
Yeah, it's terrible that people in this country express their beliefs. Everything should be censored.
Oh boy, I guess I'll be another one to tell you that you're WRONG!
Where do people get this "Microsoft owns/bought out Apple" crap?
Microsoft INVESTED $150 million in Apple a few years back. At the time, Apple was worth about $15 BILLION or so, so that means they "own" around 1%. Whoop dee do.
Huh?
Mac OS is to Mac OS SERVER what Windows 98 is to Windows NT. Mac OS Server is out now and is marketed to admins.
Mac OS X is due in January (with a public release next month) and is the next generation OS for Apple. And it's definately NOT being marketed to just admins...
While I agree that Linux is a great platform, it still has a ways to go before it's accepted as a home user solution. Or even a high school / middle school solution. And that's always been Apple's huge strong point. Linux is great fun for all the geeks here on Slashdot, but I'd rather teach my grandfather to use a Mac than to use Linux.
Plus with the Open Source nature of Linux, there's going to be even more UI's and companies wanting to put their own spin on the Linux distro they include with their systems. Just because you can use one type of Linux system may not mean you can use them all. You're a whiz installing RPMs but then you get to a system that doesn't support that...
Once again, no prob for techies, but it might confuse my mom. (who loves her strawberry iMac)
In regards to Mac games, I often think of the PC market as a filtering ground for good Mac games. There has to be some formula that PC/Mac game developers use to decide whether it's worth it to port to the Mac. Let's say your Mac sales will be 10% of what you sell on the PC. (please don't bash me on this "statistic", I just MADE IT UP!) So, if you sell 10 million PC titles you think you'll sell 1 million Mac titles. And that's worth it, so you do it. But if you game sucks and you sell 500 copies, selling 50 copies for Mac won't be worth the port. I don't care if there's 10 word processing programs for PC because I'm not going to use 10 word processors. I'll use one. (maybe two) Nor am I going to own every PC games. Just the best. (which, if they're that good, they'll be ported to Mac)
If a good game is ported to a Mac, it'll be talked about in every Mac publication and Mac website out there. With new PC games, it's "Here's yet another PC game..." And it has to be REALLY REALLY good to get the same publicity in the PC world as that Mac port did...
Why do sites like Slashdot still post rumors from Apple? They're usually wrong. I understand why Apple rumor sites do it, but Slashdot mostly posts confirmed news except when it comes to Apple. Then they'll happily post rumors.

"Cube Computer" and "PowerMac G4 Cube" are different things... They're not going to get any money just because someone else has the word "cube" in their system.
I love the handle that pops up when you push it and then you slide the whole thing up... like some sci-fi nuclear reactor core.:) The DVD drive that loads like a toaster is cool, too. And I guess the fanless convection system is cool, but do that many people think most computers are noisy?
This has nothing to do with Napster! It's founded by two of the investors in Napster. It is a totally separate company from Napster and totally different software.
Yeah, sure, it sucks if you spend 20 minutes downloading a song to find it's been hacked, but if it only takes you a few seconds, it may be annoying, but just go pick another song from the list. Also, couldn't song artists say that people are wrongfully using their name? No big deal with the cuckoo sound, but what if I have a 3 minute ad for my web site in MP3 format and label it "Metallica - Enter Sandman"?
It's just a different business model. Either you can sell cheap computers to every man, woman, and child or else sell few computers but have more loyal customers (and have 28% profit margins). There is a future for Apple because there's no clone and it's more of a closed system. I have no loyalty to PC makers. I don't care if my next PC comes from HP, Dell, Compaq, or if I make it in my basement.
Apple is a hardware company, not a software company. Putting Mac OS version whatever on Intel would cause them to sell less Macs, which is just plain dumb. They'd rather sell 2 millions Macs in a year and have 2 million people using MacOS than sell 1 million Macs in a year and have 10 million people using MacOS. Stop thinking like Microsoft!:)
Isn't that what happened to Atari?

Yeah, right. It makes much more sense for Apple to spend time creating Photoshop graphics of the Cube instead of just taking a picture of it. Moron...
