While I don't mean to imply that non-academics cannot be academic, and further, Kurzweil is certainly no idiot. However, the last time I checked he doesn't really have the education of a historian or scientist. I was reading "the age of the spiritual machines" and someone asked me what his(Kurzweil's) educational background was. I had assumed (incorrectly) that he was trained as a scientist. He has a bacholor's degree from MIT.

I agree. Further, these days I generally only see movies out if they are in the very narrow class of movie I will watch even if it's bad, or, if it gets over 90% on rotten tomatoes. I've planned to go see several movies and changed my mind at the last minute after checking online reviews. Movie screens have become smaller and smaller while home sets have become larger and larger. The difference in audio/visual experience just isn't that great for most movies while the home environment is usually more comfortable. ymmv.

Your analogy is absurd. I pay for my car to get to and from the store, similarly, I pay for upload and download bandwidth. The elephant in the room is that content is business and hence requires a profit. I don't come here to look at ads, I come here to discuss techy news with geeks. The "news" stories, well the good ones, are submitted by users. Those same stories could as easily be submitted to a peer to peer oriented system. No ads would be necessary as the only bandwidth consumed would be that which we are already paying for. With few exceptions, those submitting the stories are interested in sharing and discussing, not running a business. I block ALL ads, hell, I even block the slashdot sony image because it says sony and I don't want to look at it. Now, I am in the process of buying some voip equipment which I found out about on slashdot. Without slashdot as a forum I wouldn't be buying those products. Perhaps slashdot, and hence others, should negotiate some micropayment scheme with businesses to obtain some ad revenue everytime a product name is mentioned. You can whine ALL you want, I don't care. The price for my eyes to read your stories about products is that I do it without looking at ads. When it is no longer profitable for you to do that, then innovation will take your place and provide another forum where it is possible.

  15. MAC Hardware is NOT the platform of choice. on Dvorak Says Apple Move to Intel Will Harm Linux · · Score: 1

People are talking about this as if the x86 defines the platform of choice for linux users. PCs are the platform of choice because of their ubiquity, not because of the processor they run. Linux on x86 macs will have many of the problems that Linux on ppc macs have now. Granted many of the proprietary software issues will most likely go away, e.g. flash, but new hardware will still have the same kind of driver issues that you have today. Many people will continue to choose linux on PCs over linux on mac because linux on PCs will be much cheaper than linux on mac and linux on PCs has a longer track record. Things will work and have fewer glitches on known hardware. Now OS/X on PC hardware, that would create a much bigger dent in the linux marketshare.
