Being a fan of car audio, I have worked with dampening sounds in vehicles; the same principals apply (essentially). Many car audio shops will have material that will dampen sound, some of it is spray on too, I've been toying with the idea of ripping my case apart, spraying all metal surfaces with this material and then see if there is a difference. I know in cars Dynamat (I think) makes a great difference, we used industrial sound dampening material from a factory a friend worked at and noticed a huge difference in noise in car, the computer should have the same effect.

My linuxbox at work has been up for 3 weeks and not a single portscan, connect on telnet, rlogin or ssh.. My Linuxbox at home on cable.. 5-10 portscans per day, atleast 10 connections on telnet, ftp and other services per day. (none of them actually work of course, they're locked down) Its all about where the box is sometimes..

While working on a microwave project at part of my electronic engineering schooling I talked with a few people who had some interesting stories, like being able to throw a hot dog weiner up infront of microwave transmitters and have the hotdog come back down cooked.. (Northern Canada Military Installation) Or a member of a ground crew who got fired from a microwave transmitter that a pilot left on.. Whoops.. never mind long term affects to the earth.

Working for an ISP that uses UUNet for our provider I've had to call them a few times when we've had problems. Sometimes you just have to simply hang up and call back and hope to get a different person. Many times people just don't care or don't want to listen to what your saying. In this case I would suggest trying to find a Tier 1 person who is willing to work with you. When I discovered that one of @Home's routers (the one I was on)was dropping packets I called them and got a great tech support guy. He had me mail him some trace routes and some pings and then had the problem fixed within an hour. On the other hand I've spent 3 hours trying to get them to admit that their DNS or DHCP servers were down. Sometimes you just get lucky..

Is it really fair to count port scans as an attack? I can see classing it if it comes from a 192/10/172/169 address but normal scans are part of life, or they are at least for my boxes and me. With portsentry on them I usually get 5 a week from sources all around the world, usually they just check for mail relay and script kiddy tools but sometimes I'll catch the same IP scanning many machines, then they get monitored.

I've recently set up streaming audio for a Radio station and a Hockey club. We decidied to with Microsofts Windows Media Encoder. The nice thing is that MS's monolopy had enabled them to include Windows Media Player with 98. They connect, media player grabs the codec, and away they go. There is no downloading and installing software. I know that this wont work on *nix but, what percentage of your listeners are going to be sitting on a BSD box compared to Windows? Just something to consider. The Encoding is being done by a Celeron 400 / 92Megs and Streamed by a P-Pro / 128Megs and can handle 100+ Streams (If we have the bandwidth)
