  1. Re:Hitachi DVP505 on What's The Best Combo DVD/VCD/CD/MP3 Player? · · Score: 1
Gibson's Sound and Vision (Waterloo and Guelph Ontario).

I also saw it at FutureShop though for the same price... but they didn't have any in stock and I'm not fond of buying from them.

    Enjoy.

  2. Hitachi DVP505 on What's The Best Combo DVD/VCD/CD/MP3 Player? · · Score: 2
I was looking for exactly the same thing for a Christmas gift for myself and I think that I found it. Actually, I know it's sitting under the tree cuz I bought it for my family to give to me, and I did test it a few times before they wrapped it up to make sure it really did do everything that I wanted.

The Hitachi DVP505 is capable of reading both professionally recorded media and "burnt" media since it has the dual lasers. This means that when I dropped in a VCD that I acquired from the internet it worked and played through to completion... Very very shitty quality VCD, but hey, it played.

It also played any MP3 CD that I threw at it, although it's not an officially supported feature (yet). The interface wasn't awesome for the MP3's since it was limited to displaying my 32 character file names as 8.3 (see yesterdays article), but I've been told that the firmware COULD be upgraded to improve that once it's an official feautre... But it works none the less.

So it definitely plays CDR & CDRW VCDs, MP3 CDs and Audio CDs. How about DVDs? Well I *heard* that The Matrix was a problem DVD so I watched it on this player and didn't notice any problems. Also watched Chicken Run (great movie) and bits of Titan AE, Princess Bride and Gladiator. I may have missed something small while I was drooling over the picture quality though, so if you're a video/audiophile then go and test it at the store for yourself. :)

    Other features?
    - 5.1 Channel DTS and Dolby Digital decoders & discrete output
    - "Super" Surround Sound
    - Dual Layer
    - Dual Laser
    - Random Play of CDs (maybe MP3 CDs too)
    - S-VIDEO, Composite, Component, Digital & Coaxial out
    - Untested Remote Region-Free Hack
    - No Macrovision hack that I've been able to find without a mod chip.

    I got mine for $450CDN + taxes so that's about $3.02 USD :)

I can tell you more in 6 days :)

  3. What about Web/Wireless Mail? on Protecting Your Company While Protecting Privacy? · · Score: 1
On a related idea, what about Webmail or Wireless Email? Here in Canada I am in the employ of a company, but I also use my email address for personal use. This is not the issue. What if I were to access my email account via something like the Wireless Sympatico Service? It's a HDML site that connects me to my POP3 Email box via my cell phone. It's a handy service. But are they liable for the content of the messages that pass through their system? What about Hotmail-like services? are they liable? how do THEY handle these situations?

So aside from the obvious privacy concerns about checking my POP3 email using another service, if I send an email from my cell phone (never touches my standard SMTP server) or access one is the company that provided the service liable?

    I don't know.. Maybe it's a stupid question.

I'm also reading this book, but unlike the reviewer I had never read the articles before. I've been interested in Linux and OSS for about a year now and had repeatedly heard of these essays.

I purchased the "dead tree" version because I sit behind a computer all day long and would prefer to read things like this on the train, or in my living room, rather than at my desk... My employer is probably also glad I bought the book :)

Needless to say.. it's an excellent read.. esp. if you haven't read them before.. Plus the book is cheap ($28.50 CDN taxes and shipping incl from chapters.ca).

  5. Dcypher or distributed.net? on Distributed.net Does CSC · · Score: 1

Today is my first day at using any distributed cracking client. I found out about it here on /. today, and think that it's a realy cool idea. That said: Dcyper may be 2x faster, but isn't it more likely that the distributed.net effort will be more successful (without optimizing the client to equivalent speeds even)? My reasoning: 1) More people are aware of d.net 2) Being a new "member", I'm more inclined to go with the team/effort that has proven that they can do it (3 previous victories). So without any of the problems of the past (of which i am not aware) taken into consideration, wouldn't the new user (or even the seasoned veteran) tend to trust d.net over the other guy? Just curious.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could go about installing this on my Slackware 4 system? Honestly, I haven't gotten Xfree to work at all since I got my Rage128. I've been waiting for this day... Links are fine also. Thanks in advance.
