I would think not. The firm I used to work for just replaced it's taxidesk system which ran on SCO. I think quite a few people are following suite with anything SCO related.
I have to wonder why SCO, or related investors, or anyone else never considered the ramifications of their claim. A name change or even another company purchasing their products wouldn't likely result in any profitable business in the future.
Had they shown any tangible evidence in the beginning I being a reasonable person would have had to consider their claim. I would have thought they would have done this by now to save their core business. This, and investor's decision to retract their backing are the only reasons I give their case no merit.
They've only given us wingdings, and very aggressive interactions with the OS community.
Are they trying to make amends? Or is it just the fact that they don't have an http daemon, a database server, etc.
I personally like the gcc readme file that I've seen when compiling my compiler.:)
OK - I decided one day to pay for video at CNN. I did not realize at the time that it was Real Media ONLY. And I didn't know of any alternatives. I called some support number shortly after and cancelled the transaction for the sole reason of their player being what it is.
Kind of makes you wonder how long Apple has been planning on their x86 compatibility.. I dont think they would already be kicking this stuff out for the G4s without serious hardware modifications or even a total replacement of the mainboard if it hadn't been on the horizon for some time. I've never seen or opened one of these up. Maybe the processor is on it's own daughterboard? I also see the word 'Upgrade' but not sure if they are referring to an upgrade of their own product line or an upgrade for existing users.
Quick scan of TFA says it uses a bit of emulation and 'Glue Logic' to pull this off.
Hmm Glue Logic. . Mr Owl. . How many rolls of duct tape does it take to get to the center of the G4 Cube/PCube.. ..
Has Samba gotten enough market share to distribute their own Windows client? I know Samba offers ease of deployment and enables it's own rapid growth by working with MS so well but can't SMB be improved upon? If I want to compromise a windows environment the first thing I would do is capture SMB packets to get the MD4? challenge/response.
Microsoft has already proven their ability to emulate or buy everyone else's technology (Remember the Internet King? Hats off to Matt G.!). How are we any different? Did they buy NDS and call it AD? Would there have been an AD without NDS?
I think working with SMB is important to gain more markget share but how long do we JUST emulate MS?
Microsoft's ego would prevent them from 'adopting' better open source technologies long enough for OSS to gain significant market share. For so many years the only hit for "Linux" on Microsoft's site was how to use the/MBR switch for FDISK.
Oh come on! If I put together something like this I would WANT it to get slashdotted!
Years from now you could pull it down from a shelf.. or point at it in the corner and say.. I made a CPU and it got slashdotted!
The ISP may not be too happy though : )
For those of us who were looking at Apple's G5 to host rather intensive work loads we're more or less left out in the cold.
I know I can go to www.ibm.com and buy a 4-way G5 and have my way with it but I like to reward innovation with my dollars. Vendors whose decisions seem to have originated from some primal bong water slime dont get my dollars and will have a hard time getting them in the future.
Apple could probably have continued to provide servers/workstations based on their current offerings for some time without having to invest much $$. I think a complete move to x86 may very well have an unforseen impact on their bottom dollar.
MAC, and PC users are much like MS, and Linux/other users. Forcing one to be like the other in the smallest of ways like this isn't going to go over well. If I had any amount of Apple stock I would have to consider it a liability at this point.
I can see the benefit of this decision but not like this.
Here to turn the world into a load o crap!
Apple has aparently already formed 'the pile' and it obviously hasn't worked so we have to think of some other way to counter their decision!
I forget what they called the future people but this sounds familiar? Marklar?
Apple's choice of processor arc and a BSD OS were well on their way to making me a loyal Apple fan.
Sure they'll be able to return more dollars to investors with higher profits and lower their crazy prices. . but at what cost? Who wants to buy an overpriced PC that runs BSD.
Way to take the feather out of your hat Apple!
It seems to me after I RTFA that the wine group actively identified this as being a problem and pursued corrective measures. The article also mentions that PostgreSQL replaced some of their functionality recently to avoid conflicting with an existing IBM patent even though IBM declares that it will not use it's patent war chest against any OSS projects. I think this sends a clear signal that the community is aggressively looking for this type of thing. I've no idea how Borland has been doing financially over the past few years but it definitely seems worthwhile to ensure that smaller companies dont have something like this to use against us.
A small company claiming to own rights to significant portions of the linux kernel, or even patents covering something widely used within could really cause a black eye. I also think it's safe to say that SCO has inadvertently shown the other players how voiced, and loyal the OSS crowd is.
This is sucky news but it is encouraging to know we're looking for this type of thing.
With Microsoft patenting breathing and other bodily functions (Windows seems to be proficient at one or more bodily functions) independent developers have to be very discouraged.

Let's hope Daryl hasn't figured out how to get the JVM installed on his own machine yet. "UNIX-like" might give him some new bad ideas!
