MHz Pentium II
I work in a hospital. At the moment we are handing out nice new systems to all our administrators, consultants and other 'important' people. The people who actually make use computers like doctors, secretaries and so on often get a "recycled" computer from me. The spec is PII 266to350 96to128MB memory and whatever HDD is already in it as long as it is over 2GB.
These systems work fine and they run M$ Office2000 (ugh!) as well as the new machines. They connect to the network just as well and go on the WWW just as well. The only real difference is that they take longer to start.
Nasa has already successfully reached Mars....and other stuff.
Sending robots is not exploring. It is sending robots. It is only related to explration if it is done as preparation to actually sending people!
Robots and unmanned probes cannot explore, they can gather a lot of great information. The last exploration was done by Appollo 17 - 29 years ago!!!
Much of what is done in earth orbit now is development. If it is development that either is useful to humanity, scientifically interesting or preparation for exploration, it needs to be encouraged and removed from control of beureaucrats and politicians who take pride in their ignorance.
Get rid of your signature, it appears in every email and gives big brother food for doing correlations.
Alternatively, use something to generate random sigs. I'm sure fortune can be used for this. I've even seen something that can do it for OutlookDistress.
they should tell their employers to mind their own bloody business
From what I have heard about your employment practices in the USA that will not be good for your career prospects...
I understand the reasons for DVD region coding.
Can you explain them to me then please? Why can't I buy DVDs from the US in the same way I can buy books CDs and the like?
The only way around CSS is to either crack the coding (against your rules) or fix my DVD player and invalidate the warranty.
I work in a hospital. I spent more than 18 months up to y2k in making sure that when the date rolled over, things would carry on working.
They did!
If I and thousands (millions?) like me had not spent our time like this, there would have been dead people, hungry people, riots, darkness, no water, unreated sewage in the rivers, no working railways and a load more things that would have made good reading in the moron papers.
The news media was very annoyed with us because we prevented all these and more. Sucesses do not make good stories. When was the last time the space shuttle got banner headlines on all the papers? When it went wrong.
Time was not wasted. It was not a scam or false alarm or anything else the ignorant want to call it.
The hospital I work in would have had no water, electricity for a limited time, no way of getting rid of a LOT of very nasty stuff that hospitals generate, no telephones heating or all sorts of nice stuff.
Don't get me started! Anyone who thinks that the Y2K success we had was a non-event needs to get their head out from where the sun doesn't shine!
Having my personal details kept from abuse by corporate misuse - unless I want them to.
I want the data about me to be only available to people I want to know and for purposes that I agree to. My government has to follow these rules along with the police and any other official bodies. Do you want your employer (or potential one) to know about your asthma or the recreational drugs you were busted for 15 years ago?
Don't worry, much of your government will do what they are told by big business. Since much big business is owned by and run from the USA, they will be getting the same instructions that the US government gets!
We need to keep reminding you people in the USA that it is not you we are seeking protection from - it is from your horrifyingly unprincipled "mega corporations".
This law has no effect on the civil liberties of private citizens in the USA except that it may improve them.UK data protection legislation has not affected the way I behave other than to make me feel that my information about myself belongs to ME and not some suit.
Yes, Kyoto should be a source of embarrasment to people in the USA, but I dont think being flown into by a Chinese fighter jet is the fault of the crew of the larger, slower, older and less manoeuvrable "spy" plane lumbering along in international airspace. I have no doubt that the US government regrets it enormously, but it was the fault of the Chinese pilot and therefore the responsibility of his airforce and ultimately China.
It doesn't work like that. SETI software has followed the same path as other software. It has grown.
There was an upgrade a few months back. We had to run it or the system would refuse to accept our results. The time taken per unit has increased by over 60%.
Your Office2000 bloatare goes at the same speed as WP51 on your old '386 doesn't it...
Of course it lowers support costs. Windoze support people are cheap - I am one and the fact that w95/98/NT/2k are all fairly similar for the end-user makes my life simpler and if my life is simpler, I need less help.
Of course other costs go up far more, to make up for this. User training costs are far higher. Just think of Abi Word and MSWord. Increased down-time is another expense along with hardware and (very minor) software licensing.
Support costs are lower but TCO is FAR higher.
Maybe we could force all people to teach thier kids english I wonder if there is a higher percentage of germans in Germany wo can speak english than there is in the US or the UK.
Their grammar is better than a lot of people around me in southern England as well....
What moron modded that to flamebait? ... they are not used to *spy* on people but for security. is a statement of fact!
Cameras are springing up all over the UK because people demmand that they are put up
You can tell the areas with better political representation, because they are the ones with cameras. Go to a "nice" town and there are cameras. Go to a not so pleasant one and there are not so many. People harrass their councils and MPs to get these put up in their areas.
Why? Because people want them. The Government would rather spend £350million on what it wants. It has been forced to do this by the people
Have you ever been in the army/navy/airforce/etc?
I presume they gave you an ID card. I got one in the British army - and that was just the reserve.
I have fingerprints and a blood sample. It is all on file somewhere. I don't give a s**t. If someone does something and they check my prints against it, I will be crossed off the list.
Or do you think criminals carry a set of your fingerprints on some rubber gloves, James Bond style?
Tracking device? My VisaCard tracks me everywhere I go. I have a swipe card for access through doors where I work (a hospital). So what??
I have someone watching me walking down the street. Maybe he is an unsuitable person maybe not. Maybe someone will get a copy of the tape and see me walk down the street. They may well be a bad person.
You have people walking around with guns. Some of them may be bad too.
I would be less worried about a criminal watchimg me on CCTV than one watching me walk down to street with a gun in his hand.
Yes I know some of our criminals have guns, Some use them. Still a lot less than in the USA.
You might not be interested in it but it is a positive use of knowledge, science and technology. I like to hear things that show that we can make the world a better place without returning to the 17th century.
I understand that, early in the 20th century, people felt that science & technology would make the world a better place. 2 World wars dispelled this idea and for the last couple of decades we were told to forget all that c**p and get back to nature. Apparently we needed to forget all the things that had already improved the world, like medicine, western engineering and internal combhustion engines.
This guy is using science and engineering to make a desert/war-zone into somewhere that you can get food.
Have all those cameras reduced the number of IRA bombings at all?
Yes they have. Every now and again they catch the dirtbags that blow up our civilians - men, women and children alike. These dirtbags then spend some time in jail not blowing up someone else.
Whose brains are you mopping off the floor?
Certainly not very often the brains of our children off the floors of our homes and schoolyards!
Please do not assume that all Christians are so ignorant as to call evolution crap! In fact I suspect most of us won't even use the word. Personally I prefer "c**p" as my description of the attitudes that forbid its utterance in so much of US state schooling.
I am quite happy to think that the theory of evolution contains a good way of explaining, in modern educated concepts, how The Lord may have done some of His creation.
> British schools that have the reputation for brutality
You are talking absolute rubbish. The brutality that people on your side of the pond are thinking of is what you may have heard of from the British Public School system, and that information is 50 to 100 years plus out of date.
Public School is not one that is owned by the state, it is one that is generally paid for by the parents and portrayed as elitist by politicians.
Normal British schools are not particularly brutal. Guns are almost unknown in them and knives are a reason for a very quick expulsion.

30kg (pounds? hope not another ESA blunder)
Why on earth would anyone except the USA even consider using pounds? And while we are at it, why does the US use them?
