my final year project for my CS degree was to write a compiler.
I chose to write a compiler (in C) that compiled VB6 source code to JVM class files.
Why Java? VB is used for GUI apps, which GUI do I compile for under Linux?
There are several but at least the Java classes are immediately portable.
(I only had 4 months to write it, and do regular university stuff at the
same time so not all of the VB language could be implemented!)
I think you're confusing writing command line apps with writing GUI apps.
I'm pretty sure NT is Posix compliant. I have written programs in C and compiled (and tested) them both on Windows and Linux platforms without modification.
Does it make sense to put Linux on a toaster?
Does it make sense to drive your kids to school in a 6-litre gas guzzler?
If someone calls you while you're making a dangerous traffic manoeuvre, you can either
a) answer it (which makes you the idiot)
b) answer it using a handsfree kit
c) don't answer it until it's safe to do so.
They do make mobile phones do what they're supposed to.
Can they not just right click and 'Format...'? There would be no 3rd party drivers involved.
Well?
What's the obsession with Google?
Symbian have been doing it for years

cheque cheque cheque bacaw!
Symbian C++ isn't that difficult, it lacks documentation though. That's being worked on.
I thought we called them carriages, unless of course you're talking about the bogies under the carriage.

A long battery life is needed because charging is a pain in the ass, and the phone isn't so mobile while it's charging
