From an empirical perspective, all people who I have introduced Linux to have hit multiple roadblocks with naming & icon issues. "Gee, couldn't they have picked a name less offensive than gimp ? why in the world... ?" "why is the button shaped like a foot ? All I want to do is start something.. foot means nothing to me." "The icon for that is a penguin. Is that a game? I'm not supposed to play games at work." I am personally ok with things as they are, but we are not considering just ourselves, are we ? The goal of pleasing a larger userbase than what we have now is to introduce the topic of marketing.
I personally have settled on a minimalist desktop/no g/k desktop. The beauty and flexibility of Linux lets me change my desktop framework at whim to a variety of work oriented layouts. No one will ever be able to take those options away from me.
However, there exists the objective of growing a bigger usebase and mindshare. I am glad some desktop developers have taken the direction of naming things more sensibly. There are new (as in never used a computer before) users and other OS users. Windows has the biggest base to target, so lets go for that. To steal developers and users, I think making things named & iconed very similarly would be of great benefit for attaining this goal.
There is the risk of incurring lawsuits from monopolies. But that is what monopolies to to maintain that status; it is inavoidable. Or another way of saying it is if certian projects are incurring lawsuits from monopolies, then a threat has been touched on & progress is being made. I would argue that the terms 'keyboard' 'speaker' 'camera' 'email' 'image' 'picture' 'game' are a generic terms and the words and iconic descriptions of them cannot be copyrighted.
I disagree that the bacteria is the root 'cause' of ulcers and the C-W about stress can be discarded. To me, what he seemed to prove is that by consuming a lot of this bacteria, one gets an ulcer. That's fine, ok, but I'm going to wager that most people who have ulcers don't drink quarts of this specific microbe.
Chronic long-term stress weakens an immune system in a variety of ways. This has been shown in many studies. So, if the immune system is compromised, bad bacteria gets in & grows. If an ulcer happens and a person is stressed, is the 'cause' stress or bacteria ?
If one was stressed out and had a compromised immune system, one starts getting infected with various things like colds, flus, ulcers, heart disease, weakened mucles & bones, etc... Financially, what would be better for that person, treating the stress or going to the Dr several times and filling a dozen prescriptions to treat individual ailments ?
On the other side, financially, what would be better for the medical & pharmeseutical industry, a person treating their stress by themselves or going to the Dr several times and filling a dozen prescriptions to treat individual ailments ? Don't you think that a Doctor makes money by treating ailments ? Don't you think that a Doctor's motivations might be swayed a little bit by the buck ? I'm not saying Doctors are bad people, I'm just saying they need to make $ and eat too.
I know this is a good study and the researchers are correct in their findings. The pills will work. But if the stress isn't treated, the ulcers will come back. The use of the word 'cause' is greatly misused by the media.
"dealling with trojans is a 90% user function." - Can you define this please ? Did you just pull that number out of thin air (or someplace else). I think you made it up. Prove me wrong and show were 90% comes from and what "user defined" means. As I recall, IIS has been trojaned so many times without any user interaction. Maybe since they installed IIS, they trojaned themselves ?
Regardless of your foolish made-up numbers, there is real world statistics to look at. How many instances/sites are infected with this renegade copy of Mozilla ? Less than 1% This means that the trojan was ineffective, like usual.
I cannot say that it is impossible for many many Linux machines to be infected. There is very little that is impossible. But likewise, you can not say that just because there exists a virus for Linux, then the whole world Linux install base is in danger. Security is a matter of risks and the risk of this one is very low.
You must do better to show the severity/risk of this virus other than say, "oh, I suppose it's possible so you're all in danger"
I repeat: Show me the scale at which this virus has grown, otherwise this article pure and utter crap. There should be better moderation of who posts meaningless drivel. Doesn't Slashdot have someone review this articles before they are posted ?
I don't know the motive behind this post, but maybe writing about the possible motives might help. Please comment with me and lets see if we can see through where this guy is coming from.
He/She doesn't know squat about directory solutions available. All major OS vendors have a strong DS to go with their 'package'. Lets see, IBM.. Apple.. Novell.. Red Hat..
He/She doesn't know computer technology very well. Anyone who's been an MCSE or worked with Microsoft products knows they are just as 'cobbled together' as anyone else.
Given the appearant low skill shown by the poster, I wonder if he is really in the position described. Maybe:
1. Poster has skills/has the position. Then they are just playing a game with/.
2. Poster has no skills/has the position. Maybe the poster is a transfer from another career/sector and doesn't know technology at all besides a little bit of solitaire and the 'internet thing'.
3. Poster has skills/not in position described. Maybe the poster is a MS hack trying to see how much the tech crowd knows. Perhaps is it someone in a compentitors business that is trying to make the/. crowd look bad/foolish
4. Poster has no skills/in position described. Clueless idiots that play solitaire do get these jobs sometimes. They should be fired, but that doesn't make the # of MSCEs any less.
I don't think this is a good idea, developing support for the controllers (not just yet), unless this is a school project. Then it gets you a grade. (good one, I hope)
I looked at the 'Snowballz' game and it looks pretty bad. I've seen better games on N64 and Windows 3.1. I've seen some 3D 'snowball fight' flash games that are better than this. And they are here, now and playable on Macs, PCs and Linux alike.
I have been using Linux 10+ years now and and have been pushing it at work for almost as long. I came over for more stability and way cool customizable desktops. I had it for my desktop at work and walking by people were jumping to get that for themselves.
I put the lastest gamez on a Windows platform with kickass controllers and then put a duplicate machine next to it with Linux, controller and '3D Snoball Adventures'. Then I get an avid gamer and lead them up this set up and say, 'fire away!' The Linux game will not just not get played, the box will be yanked out of the way and thrown out the window.
The goal is to make a game far superior to a Windows game. No one is going to say, "oh, well, all buttons work on my controller so I am going to stick with this suck ass game." People will say, however, "not all the buttons work on my controller, but this game is soooo eye-candy addicting, I haven't put it down for 17 hours!..."
In addition, the console market is looking to wipe Windows games off the slate, so I don't see how Linux/OSS gaming can possibly catch up. I am not a game programmer yet, but I am pretty sure Microsoft and Sony are providing the developers with awesome 3D apis, DirectX like. Don't tell me that Microsoft sucks. They do in a lot of areas, but Halo is pretty damn addicting and good looking and playable for a vast majority of people. They must have something in their apis that is working at the moment.
Dump the controller development and go for Nvidia/Ati libraries.
