The average person lacks perfect pitch, cannot tell the difference between SD and HD unless they're side by side, thinks their 128kbps MP3s sound alright, doesn't notice 60Hz jitter on their LCD, and so on.
As a music video junkie, I have noticed that with visual content added, I can more easily tolerate a bit crappier sound quality. You can chuck 128kbps down my throat if there's pretty pictures aside (it still doesn't make it hi-fi of course). Listened separately, it sounds dull. After all that's pretty obvious psychological note (as the senses are more saturated), but still interesting.
Erm, the human eye can easily see faster than 30FPS. Some fighter pilots can see "fast" enough to notice the equivalent of 200FPS.
I agree with this. If we were going over, say 50fps, then we could start talking the same thing with video than applies to going over 44.1kHz / 16b with sound.
I certainly can see flickering with the old 60Hz CRT's.
The CRT flicker might not be exactly comparable, as the screen goes back to black constantly. If the "background" was always the previous frame, I think 60fps would look quite smooth.
As a sidenote, in general I would personally like to see more talk about increasing the video frame rate, rather than just picture resolution...
Why does it matter that it's the lead developer of DragonflyBSD?
It's nice to mention what the guy is known for. Besides, the bug came up when he was tinkering with DragonFly BSD.
If we were completely pedantic, it ultimately does not matter. Anyone interested in computers and programming with enough talent could have found the bug. But yeah.
A couple of my own notes about ruining the dynamic range...
- today it's taken to a new level, I see more and more songs where not only DR is destroyed but sound is also harshly clipped
- not only mastering, but the mixing step is also to blame, where every track volume might be cranked up or, too many tracks recorded where the song becomes an (easily-compressible) mush
- it sometimes appears that a band might have the first one or two records with good sound quality, but when they make it big, they "bend over and take it up the ass", thus the rest ones being crap
Can't you just play fair with the company you're in? You are in the same team and they pay you. Try to work it out with your superior if you have special needs. The hacks you listed are just lame.
It is probably just me but I find it really annoying to have loads of tabs open especially in Chrome. The more I have open the harder it is to see what is in each one and it just feels like I'm losing efficiency.
Ah, there's yar problem. To manage tens of tabs in a sane way, you pretty much have to use side tabs. Unfortunately they are currently not available for Chrome but may later appear as an extension.
One thing in particular that would help me is being able to have more than 8 site buttons on my home page. I would like to dump things that I want to save for later on that page.
The Opera Speed Dial feature might work for that purpose.
It's sometimes nice to leave pages that I will read a bit later to their own tabs. Later I can just close the tab. Digging through bookmarks and then removing it from there would be unnecessarily complex. Just my personal preference, of course.:)
The concept of Linux is using stable, time-proven software.
Unfortunately not so. Things do actually change quite wildly: desktops, user software, APIs. Only the GNU command line tools stay more or less the same. Windows is the most conservative of the bunch, then comes OSX and, finally on the bleeding edge Linux.
Firefox has still some Netscape feeling in the way it downloads and renders pages. There are some similarities with elements appearing on the screen and how the status bar shows progress.
Things like that are taken very seriously here, mainly because we're a relatively small country, and if you wanted you could probably meet even prime minister face to face in the mall and talk to him.
I've even seen the former president (Tarja Halonen) walking on street with her adjutant just like that. No armored limousine necessary.:) I bet Obama does not have that kind of freedom.
Something like this could indeed be created by the community. Maybe something like Ubuntu Software Center. It would also take care of updates of the software (if desired) in the same manner as Windows Update.
This is a bit different, but I have found the YouTube "whisper community" videos relaxing. The idea is to create stuff whispering, talking smoothly or with some other relaxing sounds. Check out the channels of GentleWhispering or Elelwyn. There's many more.
I looked at it and I think that Pinguy thing could have been just delivered as a list of tweaks for beginners. Could be that they are useful though. Otherwise it just seems like a slightly modified Ubuntu "garage OS".

Though in fairness, I do collect historically-significant Linux distro ISOs).
You must be great at parties. ;)

While you would get some extra fidelity for DRC too, I believe you couldn't increase the perceived loudness much at all.

Sounds like a cool job, have fun tacoman!

What I have wondered sometimes is that do cellphones have a way to see what is your own phone number? Or is it unable to retrieve it?

You can get very close though. Tabs can be placed on the left and also grouped by dragging them over each other.
Nice!

Yes, this is what I was thinking too.
And just for completeness, the Filehippo Update Checker also deserves a mention.
Ok, no more beer for you tonight...
I'm a programmer and I can't sleep because I'm thinking about stuff (bugs, better algos, etc).
Maybe this is a problem for authors or artists too.
Oh. I have actually found thinking about algorithms (and other engineering problems) a relaxing thing. It's the "counting sheep" for me.

This article is tagged with various distro names. :P
Then you are healthy.
