I would recommend Interbase over MySQL for just about any application.
There is a very active community working on it.
They forked the code because Borland/Inprise's apparent lack of real commitment to Interbase. They call it now Firebird.

Isn't it interesting that the press release doesn't mention InterBase Corporation (www.interbase.com)? I suppose the delay was mainly due to problems with the new company since the software was finished already by end of June.
