I think you've got something in there -- certainly that would be more appealing. I'm another person who doesn't have some big set up. Sure, I have a 25-inch TV... that I got in 1998. And I have it run through my stereo system... that I got in 1990. I get decent sound because it's a good stereo, but still. I want to see some movies on the big screen. Some of the bigger films don't translate as well to the smaller screen.

Some of the models are changing. We've seen a positive resurgance of drive-ins here, showing one movie at a time in traditional drive-in format. Then are are places lik the Alamo Draft House, which actually serves restaurant food during the movie with waitstaff. Much more pleasant experiences, both of them.

The paper trail is truly boggling. We're using the 'we need the paperwork for the auditors' excuse on a very regular basis now. It's a lot of user training there. We're not auditing every single thing, but having to use the programs that monitor our every move while still keeping authorities locked down is a pain. (I hate that actions that took me 30 seconds before now take me three times as long and five times the keystrokes.) Of course, my new job is sox compliance and security. Not only do I manage the sox paper trails, but I do all security changes myself. Can I say how glad I am that the next audit is months away and my new boss is the one who was in charge last time?

I admit, I never learned how to diagram a sentence effectively. I do have generally good grammar, though, even if I can't tell you the parts of a sentence. I learned in 8th grade. The teacher would also give you a big fat zero on a paper if you made even one punctuation or grammar mistake. I did it all of once: with a forgotten comma. The paper had three errors otherwise that would have taken only three points off. I never, ever did it again. I am a bit of a language and writing geek, though, and a natural proof-reader. Just please ignore my tendency to make too many typos.

Oh yeah. When I took photography classes we were supposed to use Kodak paper because that way we'd all have the same stuff, but everyone in my class discovered the beauty of Ilford Pearl and was smitten.... I haven't done any work in a dark room in years, but I rather want to again. I can't get the right look having someone else print my negatives.

  5. Re:Just the type of users who I like to avoid on Tech Columnists' Day Without Email · · Score: 1

I think the issue is more that there are often very good systems in place, but the users don't utilize them. My company, for example, has a (exceedingly generous) 500 MB limit on available server space for each user's email. Every user also has their own private network share only accessible to them, which we encourage them to use to store important documents (they are not quota restricted); they are mapped to it at login. Additionally, each user has a location on the network that goes with their site -- a private share for the site where permissions can be set -- and a public share that is intended to be used for sharing data between sites. If they want a folder on their site's private share created and locked down, they submit a request to us and we'll create it and set permissions. We also have internal IM, which we encourage them to use for any file over 10 MB. And yet people still are always running out of space and complaining to us. I don't think having yet more storage space on the email servers and bumping quota is going to help. Keeping email down to a size that is easily converted to a pst without corruption is important.
