With the gimp for raster imaging, Inkscape for vector imaging, and blender3d for 3d modeling and animation, there is no doubt in my mind that OSS has come a *loooong* way since my days as a computer artist. However, I don't see the production world moving away from Photoshop/Illustrator/Maya/SoftImage just yet. There are too many unknowns, and the last thing a production office wants to worry about is missing a deadline because the software stopped working.
As someone who may fiddle around with these programs in his free time, that is a little different than making my living and serving customers with it. The one guarantee the consumer has with pay-for-play software like Photoshop or Maya is support.
On another note, has the OSS community come up with an alternative to layout programs like QuarkXpress yet?
While your reasoning has been backed up by well-thought-out arguments, I'm sorry to inform you that I can only give you partial credit. Your arguments as to which foreign country you would rather be outsourced to are adequate, but you have not convinced me as to whether or not you would rather be outsourced to Mexico or M$. (or should I have deduced that M$ was at the bottom of the list?).
Overall, nice work. I'll give you a B- (which when converted to the Mexican grading system equals an A+++)
Yup, you're right. It wouldn't have happened had I been using MS SQL b/c 'rm filename.database' would have given me an error. I learned a *very* valuable lesson that day.
I had the same problem a few years back when I worked for a web hosting co. I was your basic tech and you wouldn't think that would be much of a problem, right? Well, only if you're doing menial crap, fixing permissions, blah, blah, blah -- but I was one of the few that had root access on quite a few servers, including the MySQL and DNS servers. I tried telling my boss on multiple occasions about distractions, but he didn't listen and the inevitable happened. I ended up deleteing (by accident) a major MySQL database. Oh man did the backup team come in handy then. Even after that incident, my boss refused to move me to a quieter location.
This same jacka$$ said that IM was a distraction and we were not to install it on our desktops.
Is it wrong for me to feel good that the company has since gone out of business?
I'd have to agree with you. I was a graphic design major and a computer art major. I find the design interesting and very pleasing to the eye, but not suitable for print.
It would definitely work well as an interactive piece for education. i.e. take it into a Macromedia program and put some pretty rollovers and/or videos, etc. . .

What is this news-paper you speak of? Have they found a way to print moveable type on a surface?
I'll take my chances with Slashdot news. It doesn't anger me quite as much as mainstream media.

So under the cloak of being against M$, /. is just another fly in their web?? Where's my tinfoil hat?
Well, would you rather be outsourced to M$, or India/China/Mexico?
This is not a rhetorical question. I really want to know.
With all of these monkeys slinging stuff at each other, I believe local weathermen are gonna have to come up with a new graphic.
How exactly do you depict p00p falling from the skis (I mean skies)? And would there be different graphics for, say, runny vs. solid? Ewww...
You could go with a pair of big honking hearing protectors for maximum impact, too.
I personnaly like the Cap Mount earmuffs because they protect you from crashing/falling servers as well.

Don't you know that by using the internets at work, you are funding terrorism and destroying freedom?
.Oh nevermind.
If surfing is outlawed, then only. .
The new chart, while certainly eye-catching. . .
There's your answer (fishbulb). It seems nowadays if it isn't appealing to the eye, kids don't want to bother with it.

Does 'Sir William Ramsey' look *a lot* like Tom Selleck?

Maybe a vote for a new element, PrivateDickium, or Higginsium?
