  1. It's all about the story stupid! on Toy Story 3 Scrapped · · Score: 3, Insightful

The Pixar mantra has been "It's all about the story". If Lasseter says the "Disneyfied" TS3 is scrapped for now, then the developed story "stunk". It's not possible to start with crap and turn it into honey. More power to PIXAR-isney.

  2. How much does Taiwan think is reasonable? on Violating A Patent As Moral Choice · · Score: 1

I think if the Taiwanese government wanted to assert a moral stance they should determine an amount they think is reasonable to pay the patent holder, Roche. Set this amount of money aside and should the courts come after them then offer this "reasonable" amount as compensation. If Taiwan thinks $0 is reasonable then the court rules in favor of Roche, end of story...

They finally found-out what is causing global warming... it's the cell phone! Put a cube of ice in a microwave and one minute later, POOF water!

  4. Paper TV, Paper display, Paper everywhere on Fujitsu Debuts Bendable Electronic Paper · · Score: 1

The last I looked the cost of one of these is intended to be low, after all it has to compete with real paper, talk about cheap. Now if the density of the display is high, the colors can be made accurate and the state change speed is high you could replace every display in the world. A screen that can be rolled up, is as thin as "paper", that can be any size. I'll take my cheap, low power consumption Hi def Palm/portable and can I have a side of Ultra HDTV for my entire wall, Please. There may be some technical hurdles to jump but this could cause a new revolution of products. Right now, how about a keyboard with keys that change to a selected font or the selected function desired. Hey wait, that's patentable, I get these ideas all the time, but I've probably said to much...

  5. One web tool is not enough. on Best Web Authoring Application? · · Score: 1

I use or have used a number of web authoring tools. I hand code and create pages with WYSIWYG tools. I've used: GoLive, Dreamweaver, Flash, NotePad and Freeway. I find myself using Freeway first, then GoLive and sometimes Flash. Take note: the learning curve on many of these tools can be somewhat steep. Overview: Freeway is the fastest tool for creating web sites. I can WYSIWYG 95% of the web site in 1/5 the time of hand coding. The output file is pretty small and the time I save is worth 1000 times the extra 2 or 3 seconds that you might save by handcoding. The files created with Freeway work with all most all new web browsers. Firefox, MS Exployter, Navigator, and Safari. (Those are the only ones I test). Freeway is very powerfull, extensable and freindly to work with. (Try to hand code text flowing around a graphic, Freeway has a plug-in for that). The HTML is good as is the CSS. (Learning curve, what's a learning curve, pretty shallow) GoLive: If I can't do it with Freeway I use GoLive. Here I can hand code the file and easily look at the code. I can create JavaScript and recompile the HTML and CSS simplifiying the code as I see fit. (Watch the learning curve on this one.) Flash: Using both Freeway and GoLive I can add sound and movies, but to REALLY add animation I create Flash files. These can easily be added to a web page or completly replace a page with a Flash animated page. (Watch the learning curve here) If you only use one product you won't have the flexibility, speed and capabilities you need to create ANYTYPE of web page you want. If you are doing a buisiness working with web pages, SPEED, portability and deadlines will be your enemy. If your really good at it, and you are only creating pages for your own edification, then hand coding may fit your needs. But when you have a client with veins pounding in their forhead you need to show progress NOW. They want to see what your doing, they want to approve the progress you make and it needs to be done three days ago, you must use a good WYSIWYG tool.

  6. It's all about the story. on Can Hayao Miyazaki Save Disney's Soul? · · Score: 1

I'm a hobbiest animator and part time animation/art instructor. Disney's big problem is to little story. Although I love the look of a well animated film it's the story that makes or breaks the film. Even a simple story told in an imaginative way works (Star wars episode 4). Complex stories with ROTTEN special effects also work (Dr. Who) and of course great stories, great effects, good humor excellent movies (Pixar). Disney has become too hollywood. Nothing special, nothing new, rehashed, over produced, dull and boring. I think they had the right idea, fire some people and start fresh, but not the animation department (wrong target). Instead hit the folks with the problem, management, writers. Unleash the artist/animators, let them do what they do best. Make an extremely open, friendly, positive creative environment for the animation department. Be willing to take a risk. Don't follow the age old habit of doing it "that way" because we've always done it "that way". If Disney would only make an incubator for ideas to flow and get the management out of the way they could make some great films. Don't believe this then look at Pixar and Studio Gibly, they seem to have caught on to the magic.
