  1. Distraction. on Texas Senator Proposes Game Tax · · Score: 1

I like how they talk about how it will 'help the children', instead of how it might negatively affect the game economy in the state. Shouldn't the rule of the thumb be "government doesn't need to go where government doesn't need to go"?

  2. EDISON?!?!?! on Was Thomas Edison Right about DC Power? · · Score: 1

    NEVER!

  3. Uwe Boll on BloodRayne Hits Theatres · · Score: 1

Needs to be stopped. These are crimes against gaming, crimes against film, crimes against humanity. Won't somebody please think of the children!

  4. Backup on A Workstation for Sensitive Experiments? · · Score: 2, Insightful

And of course, not entirely dependent on the "sensitivity experimentation" factor, but still: make sure to backup the results as much as possible. Try to have at least one external store of the data. After all, that could be one of the weakest links in your long chain of experimentation.

  5. In my Experiences. on Brad McQuaid On Instancing · · Score: 2, Interesting

Instancing can be a great tool in a game, especially to guard against annoying behavior like loot stealing, dishonorable PVP, and spawn camping. But for the most part, I find the normal MMO atmosphere much more enjoyable. The idea of being out in the wilderness, and that being the same wilderness as everyone elses - the idea that I could run into anyone else at any moment - that is the true fun.

I remember my favorite all time moment in gaming was during Final Fantasy XI (not an altogether wonderful game, but regardless) while I rested at a campfire. I saw someone else run past at full speed, with an orc following. I quickly ran over and helped him, we formed a party, and that was the beginning of a beautiful gaming partnership. Guild Wars may earn a lot of people through its lack of monthly fees, but a lot of people are still going to be turned off by the fact that it's not really a true MMO as they know and wish it to be.

  6. As soon as I saw the director... on Castlevania On the Big Screen · · Score: 2, Funny

I just cringed in pain. It could be Uwe Boll, but that's like the guys at 3 Mile Island going "well, at least we're not Chernobyl."

  7. Nintendos First Podcast? on Nintendo's First Podcast · · Score: 1

So they recorded a downloadable message? Seems odd that it took Nintendo so long. I mean, my little sister downloaded a podcast last year. And really, it is NOT a podcast. There were mp3 players before the iPod. They were downloading pre-recorded Radio shows before the iPod. You don't need an iPod to do it. The term DAPcast is becoming increasingly accurate and necessary. But anal retentive technology classifications aside, it's good to see that the PSP is getting some competition, and that the features of the DS are being expanded. If they could get the thing online, that would be great. God knows the touch screen would make it a lot more ergonomic than the PSPs limited interface.

  8. Re:East Coast seems under-conventioned on PAX '05 Tops 9,000 In Attendance · · Score: 1

Perhaps it's a grass is always greener mentality, but the only big cons West Side are this (which is located in far off and remote Seattle), Anime Expo, and San Diego Comic Con. East Coast cons far outnumber the ones we have in both quality and quantity.

  9. Re:Tycho Brahe? on Huge NES Collection PAX Omegathon Prize · · Score: 1

Well I'll be damned, you were right. Mike Krahulik = artist, and Jerry Holkins = Writer. But, since Gabe was the one who posted about the Omegathon NES Prize, I guess it really was Mike Krahulik.

  10. Tycho Brahe? on Huge NES Collection PAX Omegathon Prize · · Score: 1

As humorous the concept of a zombie astronomer devoting himself to NES games is, it would perhaps be more accurate to call him by his actual name: Mike Krahulik. After all, it's not like he can adopt the persona of a character in his webcomic and claim it for his own, regardless of how he makes news posts in that proxy. Oh yes, and on the subject of such a number of NES games, where would you even spare the time to play them all? It's a trophy collection if anything.
