I actually have this fully functional on my computer.
I recently bought a scanner to be used in Linux(tried hp scanjet 5300c first, doesn't do scl, so switched to 6300c - very nice, if you don't mind $399).
Windows software that came with the scanner can scan a page of text, recognizes the areas to be ocr'd and ones that are pictures, scans it, automatically does ocr and imports it into a word document with the pictures(looks just about the same as original).
Ocr is very good and normally only requires minor corrections. Installation also seems to have contained a program called pdfwriter(adobe or not, don't know.. but it's not acrobat) that happily writes that word document into a pdf-file thus completing the task.
Yup, it doesn't work in linux. Yup, it's not open source. Nope, I don't mind, it WORKS!
I had an Amiga 500 so I guess I'm qualified to say something.. Atari ST and Amiga 500 did compete against eachother. This was late 80's(My amiga had an 87 or 88 rom - kickstart 1.2) and early 90's. Early 90's the later versions of Amiga pretty much wiped the floor with Atari and Amiga begun to die too.. Atari was always a more serious computer and popular with musicians due to its midi-ports.
Definetly by 94 Atari was pretty much dead and Amiga was on it's way out. I remember using my Amiga 500 from about 89 until 94 and few years later I gave it away. This would have been about from 3rd grade until 8th grade. By the time I got to high school it was pretty much obsolete..
You have a point there. It makes you think about taxing when every time you have to acknowledge the total amount that is going to the government. But still, places that have sales tax are most likely not going to get rid of it. It would be only fair for consumers to make stores show the total cost maybe right next to the pre-tax cost on pricetag(true, it would make price labels bigger, but there's room at the shelves).
About gasoline taxing.. Laugh at this: Finland has over 75% of taxes in the price of gasoline. You pay over a buck for little more than quarter of a gallon (a liter that is). Totaling more than 4 bucks / gallon. And more than three of those go the government!!! That's almost twice the price of gas in U.S. that the Finns have to pay to the government alone! Taxes are of course included in the price you see at the pump(Taxes on gasoline are not marked in the receipt unlike regular sales tax - price is just insanely high).
I don't like sales tax either but consider as an example Finland. Sales tax is 22%!!! This is added to just about everything. I think that bookstores, barber-shops, etc. get slightly lower tax rates but, for instance, for computers you are going to pay that 22% extra.
But the way this is implemented is definetly better than in US. All stores are required by law to mark the full price(including vat, that is) on everything. So when you look at the prices you know exactly how much you're paying. Stores fix the prices to nice even amounts and you don't have to play with pennies at all. Although looking at the receipt you can afterwards curse the government for taking over 20cents for your dollar(different units of course for Finland).
Then again.. I currently live in Delaware and enjoy the benefits of tax-free shopping all the time(except for some special items.. might be tobacco, alcohol and medication.. not too sure). Final sale price is as marked but 5 minutes down the road in Maryland everything changes.. If they have to have sales tax why not implement it properly. Do it like they do in Finland(except for that insane rate) and take the burden of dealing with prices like 11.67 away from consumer and to the store..
Btw, I laughed my ass of about the abolishment of tax free shopping while traveling inside europe with everyone complaining and prices going up and jobs being lost and... whatever..
I think that something like this needs to get common in order to change that silly system you have in US. A shitload of junkmail through these email-2-cellphone gateways followed by a nice class action suit against the phone company for not providing adequate protection(after which all of that junkmail will suddenly stop.. =).

Irony of the situation is, however, that in Europe receiving spam email is worse. You pay for the local calls and thus essentially for receiving spam(amount of connection time for spam is pretty neglible, but still). In US local calls are free and with flat rate internet receiving few spams won't harm you at all.

One thing that I recall reading was that if you don't defend your trademark for every violation you'd lose the rights for it. Wouldn't be such a bad idea for patents too. At least that way people would know right from the beginning what they are getting into instead of some big company owning the rights to 90% of internet music just waiting the scene and market penetration to get irreversibly big and then start charging..
Let's figure your situation out. Suppose there is a man on the street falling because he slipped. Suppose you're some kind of superhuman that can see things instantly. For conversations sake let's say that your eyes constantly bombard the surrounding with special rays that move gazillion times the speed of light and you pick up the reflections to figure out what is happening without (practically) any delays.
So you see the man falling and want to help him. What is the best you can do? Suppose your superhuman capabilities include instant movement(for conversations sake let's say about a gazillion times the speed of light). So you see him falling (with no delay due to your instant supervision) act instantly, use your superhuman movement and......you catch him before he hits the ground.
If this was not true then one could transmit information instantly. Suppose you had a really sensitive gravity meter and you had some object that you could move around. Now if you would modulate the position of this object and detect the minor changes in the gravitational field of this object you'd effectively be transmitting information. If you want something backing this up you should probably look up a book on general theory of relativity..
This is exactly what I think everytime I hear that FTL signaling/traveling means going back in time. Maybe it is a mathematical solution for theory of relativity but it doesn't mean that this is applicable in practice.
Several predictions have been verified experimentally but it doesn't mean that the theory is perfect.
When learning about the theory of relativity for the first time I was certain that time dilation was just a mathematical curiosity but since it has been proven to be real(by experiments that I can understand) I have no problem accepting it.
However, experiments involving frames of references moving FTL seem impractical and such predictions I will take with a grain of salt.
An easy way round the problem you mentioned would be that one transports the equipment needed to build something that is big enough and floats to international waters and assembles it there. No registration, no laws..
If you have a beta release it is normally marked as 2.0bn, where you replace n with the beta revision. And as a comparison, Linux kernel 2.3.x is not a beta kernel it is a developmental kernel. Majority of free software uses b or a(for alpha). Just go browse any software archive..
Uh.. no way the prints are going to be able to go up to 2000dpi but the actual film will be. Ever heard of film-scanners(the ones you put your negatives into)?
If what you're claiming were true than the maximum obtainable picture from a film would be about 400pixels wide and everything else that those 2000dpi-film scanners do could be accomplished with interpolation.. I don't think so.
I actually get two totally different values for bogomips with my computer. Either 1359.87 or 679.94, which surprisingly is exactly half of the other one.
First one I get with a 2.3.99pre3 kernel and second one with 2.3.41-kernel. I have a 650 Athlon running on a 105Mhz bus thus effectively running at 682.5 Mhz. Superbypass is also enabled.
So what is the reliability of Bogomips according to this or can someone explain a little more?

Basically you just send a sms-message to a special number and it gives you an index of the latest tunes and then you can download your choice to the cellphone automatically.. All for about 0.50$. Or you can always look your favourite tune up from operators website and have it sent to your phone(yup, this really works).
Practically all of the current cell-phone models on sale support this feature and it is very widely used(you wouldn't want to have the same melody as someone else?) This has been around from at least 1997 and the special tunes in cellphones at least from 1995. And by special tunes I mean melodies.. Special ringing tones have been around since early ninetys for sure..
It certainly is wierd to hear a cellphone play just about any popular tune there is(as I don't spend much time there it certainly is even more so). Probably get used to it by time but with the non-stop ringing of cell-phones it actually gets kind of annoying.. Being a third party I might even prefer the more traditional ringing tones..
Nope.. the probability is zero. Sum of two odd numbers is always even! Consider (2n+1) + (2n+1) = 2(2n+1). If you can take a factor two in front it means you have an even number.. But then again the original poster probably meant two primes(didn't write so though..) and again according to this conjecture the probability is zero..

Nah.. more like 2.78*5 ~= 14$ (just using the same numbers as for my laptop calculations - nobody studies on weekends, right?:) on beer each week(could be something else alcoholic too). That's 2.78*5*36 = 500$/year(who's gonna study whole year round non-stop?).
Go out with your friends once a week on an average and you're sure to spend more than this.. I have a hard time spending less than 30$ if I go out(maybe I have a distorted view if this is not normal).

I still think that it is not a lot of extra money to pay for a useful tool. Over a 4 year period it averages to 2 dollars and 78 cents/day if one uses it 180 days/year. I guess quite a few college students(even the poor ones) spend more on beer.. Maybe mandating laptops would be a way to solve the campus drinking problems (no offense ment to those of you who don't drink).

There is sense in comparing those two costs and essentially with this comparison showing how relatively small the additional cost of a laptop is.
Suppose you pay abt. 12k$/year(a very conservative estimate) and stay for 4 years. That's almost 50 thousand dollars.
A laptop costs roughly 2000$ (like a student would need a four thousand dollar high end model). 2/50 gives 4% of total cost of attendance for a useful tool.
You can't seriously be saying that having a computer when attending a school is not beneficial. Maybe 10 years ago it wasn't, but times change. And those few places that require a laptop.. I'm sure they do it just for the technology's sake.
In the end you probably end up spending more on books and other accessories during that 4 years(of course these are not exclusive, but to put things into perspective).

If a university requires the purchase of a laptop then so it is. Maybe it should be taken into account with grants or maybe people who can't afford the university and the laptop should choose a different university.

Okay think US universities.. think semester fees, think about how much it costs to have a student in a university in the states. Now think how much a 4 year investment on a laptop is compared to all the other fees involved.. not much!
