I'm a palm lover myself (not in the literal sense ofc), and I think this will be great for the platform. After much arguing with my co-workers (manager types) about the merits of the Palm in business, they basically settled the argument by showing me that they could work on their 12 meg uber-spreadsheets on their CE devices.
I think Palm's market is these manager types, and I think the proliferation of stupidly large spreadsheets (or word documents) makes a good case for the need for bigger and badder CPU's and much more memory. Even if the applications just supported reading of these "monster documents", all would be well again.
Data is getting fatter, and the device has to compensate for it.
OSS/Commercial doesn't seem to matter one bit to my boss. All she cares about is the results. We produce better quality (reliable) software at at a faster rate with our OSS platform and dev tools than we did with the "company standard".
Better tools make it easier to make better software.
Hey, I guess you could also use something like Phorum for this purpose also. Date logged entries, search capability... nice continuity while reading. Just structure everythign as a post. Still needs the hefty requirements, but hey, learning this stuff is fun:)
I'm really excited to see this one. The best I've seen up to this point have been Jet Li's older movies (not Leathal Weapon 3!:). If you have a chance, don't miss:
Tai Chi Master (easily his best)
Once Upon a Time in China
Fist Of Legend
Fong Sai Yuk (funny as hell)
Wow. I'm always impressed with the speed that alot of these open source projects develop. I just installed X 4.0 on my laptop about a month ago, and I thought it would take forever for them to start improving on it (see 3.3.6 -> 4.x transition). What a pleasant surprise. I have had no problems with the NeoMagic drivers for 4.x, other than a small issue where it will not turn off my LCD in DPMS mode anymore. 4.x seems to run faster, use less memory, and I really think thoses GL extensions will have a bright future for all us game players. Keep up the good work guys.
I'm not sure if anyone has posted from the perspective of an insider, but I am an order specialist for Covad.
I am a firm believer that Covad offers a very good product, not just because I work for them, but because once the customer is set up, you don't hear about outages or downtime like some other DSL providers.
The order process is not as smooth as it could be due to the fact we rely on the ILEC (phone company) to install a new line at the customers site (line sharing is coming soon). The ILEC seems to treat us like kicking dogs due to the fact that we hurt their precious monopoly (and they lost in court over and over;). Couple that with a few ISP's who don't seem to give two damn's about their customer and we heve problems. I can assure anyone reading this, that *I* will do my best if I get your order and there is a problem with it.
We apprecate our customers, we know that the only way to survive against the odds is to treat them better then the ILEC (or for that matter our competition) would treat them (which, from what I hear wouldn't take much;).
I can only say that if we (Covad, Northpoint, Rhythm) go out of business, what incentive will the phone companies have to keep DSL? Hmm, let me see... charge them $100 month for T1 speed when we could drop DSL and just charge over $3000 (or so, I'm not sure of the current prices in the US) for a real T1. I'm sorry, but I seriouly doubt DSL would be available from ILEC's at all if it wasn't for the fact that we started provide it.
I'm not saying we should be put on a pedistal as the underdog "beating the monopoly against all odds" like Linux vs. Corporate Software, but at least see what may lie in the future if we loose the ability for anyone to compete with the phone company. Broken up or not, they all seem to have the same attitude...
I have all x86 hardware at the moment, and I use FreeBSD as my Desktop and my Server OS. (Yes, to all of you who run Linux as a desktop, FreeBSD is just as viable, not to mention, looks and runs just as good on the same hardware). I'm getting a few FREE 68k MAC's from a company who is "upgrading to an all windows environment". Since there is no FreeBSD port, this sounds like a good OS to try.
Does anyone know if NetBSD has the ports collection? I'm quite fond of it.
I was hoping one of the other April fools jokes would have come true: Slashdot on FreeBSD 5.0
:)
Hmm... I guess that would mean FreeBSD 5.0 would need to be released
