As mentioned by someone else a gas is a fluid, and of course a gas is dence enough to transmit sound, otherwize we couldn't hear each other hear on earth. It's true that liquids and solids are more efficient transmitters of sound, allowing them to transmit sound for greater distances.
Anyway i'm getting off the point. A mirocphone would not have worked because space is a vacuum and hence the particle density is too low for sound waves to be transmitted
