If the artists and consumers don't want it they are free to go about their business without the record labels.
Nobody is forcing artists to sign a deal to release their music, and nobody is forcing consumers to buy records from the labels.
The labels won't learn until the public gets fed up with this crap and stop buying records.

Lazyness aside, I'd say it's fairly reasonable to expect a product that is not broken when you buy it.
