I have no doubt that the Linux deployment at Home Depot will be a success.
What I will be watching is how the Java client runs on all of those POS devices.
Will it really have the speed required for that type of application.
I once wrote a POS applications in C for Siemens Nixdorf. It's amazing what thet registers go through and how they get beaten (physically) by the users.
It would be a shame if this Linux deployment 'fails' because Java doesn't live up to is marketing!!
It should be.
I have been on several newsgroup sites like this one which automatically spell check documents for you with little or no difficulty.
I wish Slashdot would implement this feature as so many people seem to get so upset about it.
There was one part of the article that I thought a bit funny:
"The really avant garde are already poring over Microsoft's C#, which
Microsoft fancies is a sort of super-Java blending the best of C++ and
Java, and keeping their fingers crossed that it won't be a Windows-only
creature."
Well, they better do more than cross their fingers - maybe praying to some
kind of golden calf and sacrificing some kind of farm animal would be a
better idea.
C# is SO ingrained with COM+ and this.NET thing (whatever that is) that
Microsoft would need to port their whole company over to Linux in order for
it to work.
C# just isn't a competetor to Java as one of the main selling points of Java
continues to be it's cross compatibility (IMHO)
I just can't see it happenning!
The shareholders would freak!!!!!
This is supposed to be the 'white night' for the company - if they give it away - they are screwed.
They probably mean that they are going to give away portions of the IDE - not the underlying compiler technology.

This will change when KYLIX ships

Thank you all for your great advice and comments!!!!!
I am convinced that the commercials were louder than the program. Did anyone else notice?
at least he is notw a coward.
Why didn't they start the thing at 8:00PM.
> I really liked it but fell asleep during one of the commercials!!!!

Looks really cool but where are the specifics on the applications? Like - how do I type in a URL in the browser?
